In this paper we discuss how the jamming phenomenon of granular materials might be exploited to achieve programmable matter – a robotic material that permits user specified shape changes. Opportunities for applying this research to the field of architecture are discussed. Experimental results are presented, which reveal the performance of a wide variety of materials under jamming conditions.

We investigate, experimentally, synchronization in coupled chaotic oscillators in the presence of large parameter mismatches and identify a different phenomenon: generalized time-lagged synchronization. Specifically, we find that there can be a functional relation between time-lagged dynamical variables of the coupled oscillators in wide parameter regimes.

Cascades are a network phenomenon in which small local shocks can result in wide-spread fads, strikes, innovations, or power failures. Determining which initial shocks will result in the largest cascades is of interest to marketing, epidemiology, and computer networking.
