BACKGROUND Currently Norway does not recommend universal varicella vaccination for healthy children. This study assessed susceptibility to varicella-zoster virus (VZV) in the Norwegian population for the first time. METHODS A national convenience sample of residual sera was tested for anti-VZV IgG by ELISA. We estimated age-specific seropositivity to VZV, controlling for sex and geographical ...

Varicella-zoster virus (VZV), a neurotropic alphaherpesvirus, is the etiologic agent of chicken pox and shingles (zoster) in humans. Using an in vitro transient expression assay, we have evaluated the ability of the putative immediate early VZV genes, ORF4, ORF61, and ORF62 (the analogs of the herpes simplex virus alpha 27, alpha 0, and alpha 4 genes, respectively), to modulate the expression o...

Since several human herpesviruses, including varicella-zoster virus (VZV), have been demonstrated to transform mammalian cells in vitro, VZV was tested in a mouse model of virus-induced cervical neoplasia to determine whether it is oncogenic in vivo. Herpes simplex viruses types 1 and 2 and cytomegalovirus have been previously shown to induce cervical neoplasia in this mouse model. VZV was prop...

An indirect immunofluorescence test has been developed and evaluated for the serodiagnosis of herpes zoster ophthalmicus (HZO) by the detection of antivaricella zoster virus (VZV) antibody. The results show that, in patients with HZO, anti-VZV IgG antibody titre usually rises rapidly after onset. One hundred and seven of the 134 sera (80%) from patients with a clinical diagnosis of HZO had an a...

Congenital varicella syndrome refers to the spectrum of fetal anomalies associated with maternal varicella zoster virus (VZV) infection during the first trimester of pregnancy. The syndrome is rare and the risk to the fetus uncertain. We describe an unusual case of congenital varicella syndrome in which hydrocephalus was the main consequence and likely represented VZV reactivation in utero.

The transfer of antigen-specific cellular immunity in human bone marrow transplantation (BMT) was studied in 49 donor-recipient pairs, using a varicella-zoster-virus (VZV) specific lymphoproliferative response (LPR) assay. Posttransplant VZV-LPR could be serially measured in 31 long-term surviving recipients. VZV-specific T-cell immunity was detected in the early posttransplant period in 4 of 1...

Acyclovir is a synthetic purine nucleoside analogue with in vitro and in vivo inhibitory activity against human herpes viruses including herpes simplex types 1 (HSV-1) and 2 (HSV2), varicella-zoster virus (VZV), Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and cytomegalovirus (CMV). In cell cultures, acyclovir has the highest antiviral activity against HSV-1, followed in decreasing order of potency against HSV-2, ...

The ganglionic cell type in which varicella-zoster virus (VZV) is latent in humans was analyzed by using antibodies raised against in vitro-expressed VZV open reading frame 63 protein. VZV open reading frame 63 protein was detected exclusively in the cytoplasm of neurons of latently infected human trigeminal and thoracic ganglia. This is, to our knowledge, the first identification of a herpesvi...

Herpes zoster arises from reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus (VZV), causing varicella in children. As reactivation occurs when cell-mediated immunity (CMI) declines, and there is evidence that re-exposure to VZV boosts CMI, mass varicella immunization might increase the zoster burden, at least for some decades. Fear of this natural zoster boom is the main reason for the paralysis of var...
