Numerous technical modifications and various complications of the Senning procedure have been described in the literature. We describe the excellent clinical status and anatomic result of a 33-year-old patient who underwent a modified Senning operation using the left atrial appendage for reconstruction more than 30 years prior to presentation.
Trichinella spiralis is an obligate parasite of animals that has an unusual intracellular life cycle. Investigation of parasitism at the cellular and molecular levels has been challenging because of a shortage of tools for in vitro cultivation of T. spiralis. We have found that T. spiralis larvae molt, ecdyse, develop to adulthood, and reproduce when they are inoculated onto cultured intestinal...
s from and reviews of the current literature. In Volume 2 there are articles by Ballantyne on pre-auricular appendages, enencephaly and the Biddenden Maildens, as well as a case report of cerebral haemorrhage in a fetus by one Dr William Osler from Baltimore. Although enthusiastically received initially, the journal ceased publication because the required number of 50 subscribers was not reached.
Amid the boundless scientific discovery of the mid-19th century, Henry David Thoreau reflected, “The question is not what you look at, but what you see.” Scientific discovery emerges from novel perspectives on commonly observed phenomena. To truly “see” in the scientific sense, we must approach questions using the proper point of view. In this context, perspective is at least twice as important...

A clear question arises: why a cheaper, effective, treatment as left atrial appendage closure (LAAC) for non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF) couldn ́t reach a broader use? The cost of the device for LAAC + procedure itself in Germany is estimated in €9,136 [2], slightly superior to 1-year treatment with PCSK9 inhibitors [1]. The figures are similar in USA: the cost for LAAC procedure + 2 tra...
BACKGROUND In five chronically instrumented conscious dogs, we studied the effects of rapid pacing on sustained electrically induced atrial fibrillation. METHODS AND RESULTS Twenty-three unipolar atrial electrograms were recorded simultaneously from the bundle of Bachmann and the lateral wall of the right and left atria. During sustained atrial fibrillation, the surface electrocardiogram show...

Although convincing data showed that left atrial appendage (LAA) occlusion could be used as an alternative to oral anticoagulants, LAA occlusion has emerged as a common procedure for stroke prevention in patients with atrial fibrillation and absolute or relative contraindications for oral anticoagulation in many European centers, based on current recommendations of the European Society of Cardi...
