Green manures are widely used in rice production and may influence methane efflux (CH4). Influence of application of Azolla (A. caroliniana Wild.), a widely used biofertilizer for rice (Oryza sativa L.), on CH4 efflux from a flooded alluvial soil planted to rice, and select soil and plant variables were investigated in a field experiment at Cuttack, India. Azolla was either incorporated as gree...

Recent studies reported the important contribution of animal dejections as organic manure for crop production but, little is known on the decomposition rate and nutrient release pattern in wetland of the manure of pigs nourished with diet enriched with Azolla filiculoides. A litter bag study was carried out under full control during 6 weeks in pots containing 25 liters of tap water and 15g of p...

AIM The objective of this study was to investigate the dietary advantages of inclusion of unconventional nutrient source, i.e., Azolla in the basal diet of White Pekin broilers. MATERIALS AND METHODS All ducklings were randomly distributed into three treatment groups with three replicates each and each replicate having 12 ducklings and were reared in deep litter system. Groups were subjected ...

The water fern Azolla harbors nitrogen-fixing cyanobacterium Anabaena azollae as symbiont in its dorsal leaves and is known as potent N2 fixer. Present investigation was carried out to study the influence of fresh Azolla when used as basal incorporation in soil and as dual cropped with rice variety Mahsoori separately and together with and without chemical nitrogen fertilizer in pots kept under...

Azolla (Azolla pinnata) was assessed for nutrient content and feeding value in laying hen diets. Proximate analysis, together with the estimates of digestible protein, ADF, NDF and metabolizable energy indicated that it was a fair source of plant protein (285.4 g kgÿ1) with a digestible protein value of 219.8 g kgÿ1 and a metabolizable energy value of 7.59 MJ kgÿ1 (906 g kgÿ1 DM). The feeding v...

BACKGROUND The quest for sustainable production of renewable and cheap biofuels has triggered an intensive search for domestication of the next generation of bioenergy crops. Aquatic plants which can rapidly colonize wetlands are attracting attention because of their ability to grow in wastewaters and produce large amounts of biomass. Representatives of Azolla species are some of the fastest gr...

AIM The present study was conducted to evaluate the effect of partial supplementation of sun-dried Azolla as a protein source on the immunity of commercial broilers in coastal Odisha. MATERIALS AND METHODS A 180 day-old broiler chicks were distributed in six dietary treatments viz. C1: Basal diet, C2: Basal diet + enzyme, T1: Basal diet +5% protein from Azolla, T2: Basal diet + 5% protein fro...

One hundred and twenty day old straight run coloured chicken (Chabro) were distributed into four treatments: T1-basal diet, T25% of basal diet replaced with Azolla meal on dry matter basis, T3Basal diet+Raw azolla after 4 weeks, T4T2+Raw azolla after 4 weeks. Average weekly weight gain of T1, T2 and T3 were significantly higher (P<0.01) than T4 birds at 2nd week. There was no significant differ...

The cyanobacterial symbionts in the fern Azolla have generally been ascribed to either the Anabaena or Nostoc genera. By using comparisons of the sequences of the phycocyanin intergenic spacer and a fragment of the 16S rRNA, we found that the cyanobiont from an Azolla belongs to neither of these genera.
