Traditionally, the design of new vaccines directed against Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the most successful bacterial pathogen on the planet, has focused on prophylactic candidates that would be given to individuals while they are still young. It is becoming more apparent, however, that there are several types of vaccine candidates now under development that could be used under various condition...
Here, we present the draft genome sequence of ITALIC! Mycobacterium bovisBCG S4-Jena, a tuberculosis vaccine strain. The genome of S4-Jena is represented by 48 scaffolds, consisting of 132 scaffolded contigs and amounting to a size of about 4.2 Mb. New genes potentially encoding a phage fragment were identified in the genome.
A substantial change has taken place in recent years in the approach to the prevention of leprosy through antituberculosis vaccination. Since 1939 efforts have been made to start trials of BCG vaccine on humans as a prophylactic measure against malign leprosy. The third Pan-American Conference on Leprosy held in Buenos Aires in 1951, in connection with a subject of its agenda, "Actual Status of...
Mycobacterium bovis BCG is one of the most commonly administered vaccines. Complications, including disseminated BCG disease, are rare but increasingly reported in immunodeficient children. There is growing recognition of the importance of differences between BCG vaccine strains. We determined the susceptibilities of five genetically distinct BCG vaccine strains to 12 antituberculous drugs.
In 10-week-old infants vaccinated at birth with Japanese Mycobacterium bovis BCG, the number of dermal needle penetrations correlated positively with frequency of proliferating CD4(+) T cells in whole blood following BCG stimulation for 6 days but did not correlate with secreted cytokine levels after 7 h or interferon CD4(+) T-cell frequency after 12 h of BCG stimulation.
An effective new vaccine for the control of tuberculosis is badly needed. While current research attempts to improve vaccination are concentrating on new prophylactic or immunotherapeutic vaccines, virtually no emphasis has been placed on boosting individuals already inoculated with Mycobacterium bovis BCG. It is shown here that mice vaccinated with BCG gradually lose their capacity to resist a...
Mycobacterium bovis bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) is the only vaccine available against tuberculosis, and the strains used worldwide represent a family of daughter strains with distinct genotypic characteristics. Here, we report the complete genome sequence of M. bovis BCG Korea, the strain that will be actually used in Korea for vaccine production.
The attenuated BCG strain of Mycobacterium bovis is widely used as a vaccine against tuberculosis. However, in rare cases, it can be pathogenic to humans. Here, we report the first draft of a whole-genome sequence of a multidrug-resistant clinical isolate of M. bovis BCG.
BACKGROUND Pneumonitis is a rare complication of bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) immunotherapy seen in patients with urothelial cancer following the repeated administration of BCG. However, no case of BCG-induced pleurisy has been reported. CASE PRESENTATION We here report the first case of pneumonitis with lymphocytic pleurisy following bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) immunotherapy. Although m...
