Ceramic Matrix Composites (CMC) are promising future materials for jet aircraft engines. CMC parts are produced by piling fabric layers made of silicon carbide yarn. To detect defects in the parts, this study proposes a computational method in which each piece of yarn is recognized from volumetric models obtained by X-ray CT scanning. The method produces a set of curves, each of which represent...

In a study of the marine biological environment in which creosoted pilings are located, a previously unreported species of bacteria was isolated. This species was detected on creosoted piling from 11 widely differing locations and was the predominant species of bacteria found on these piling. The new organism was identified as a gram-negative rod belonging to the genus Pseudomonas and has been ...

This paper considers random balls in a D-dimensional Euclidean space whose centers are prescribed by a homogeneous Poisson point process and whose radii are forced to be in a finite interval with a power-law distribution. Random fields are constructed by counting the number of covering balls at each point. We are mainly interested in the simulation of these fields and in the empirical estimatio...

We introduce MultiPiles, a visualization to explore time-series of dense, weighted networks. MultiPiles is based on the physical analogy of piling adjacency matrices, each one representing a single temporal snapshot. Common interfaces for visualizing dynamic networks use techniques such as: flipping/animation; small multiples; or summary views in isolation. Our proposed ‘piling’ metaphor presen...

In order to understand the economic feasibility of an offshore wind farm, this paper analyzed differences in LCOE (levelized cost energy) according support type and construction method substructure terms sensitivity analysis was conducted main components LCOE. As for site be studied, Southwest Offshore Wind Farm selected, capital expenditures were calculated size farm installation unit. a resul...

As part of global efforts to reduce dependence on carbon-based energy sources there has been a rapid increase in the installation of renewable energy devices. The installation and operation of these devices can result in conflicts with wildlife. In the marine environment, mammals may avoid wind farms that are under construction or operating. Such avoidance may lead to more time spent travelling...

Classification is an important supervised learning technique with numerous applications. We develop an angle-based multicategory distance-weighted support vector machine (MDWSVM) classification method that is motivated from the binary distance-weighted support vector machine (DWSVM) classification method. The new method has the merits of both support vector machine (SVM) and distance-weighted d...

In this paper, we extend the idea of piling-up lemma and linear cryptanalysis applied to symmetric-key block ciphers. We also examine this new method of Extended Linear Cryptanalysis on two-round Rijndael, which is designed to be immune to linear cryptanalysis attack. Even though our results do not show much surprise on two-round Rijndael, the effects on other block ciphers remain open questions.

High Dimension Low Sample Size statistical analysis is becoming increasingly important in a wide range of applied contexts. In such situations, it is seen that the popular Support Vector Machine suffers from “data piling” at the margin, which can diminish generalizability. This leads naturally to the development of Distance Weighted Discrimination, which is based on Second Order Cone Programmin...

Steel monopiles, jackets requiring four steel pinpiles, and gravity-based foundations were applied in offshore wind farms in the Belgian part of the North Sea. This paper compares the underwater noise generated during the piling activities of steel monopiles at the Belwind wind farm (Blighbank) with that of jacket pinpiles at the C-Power project (Thorntonbank). Underwater noise was measured at ...
