We compared a multiplex viral transplant panel on the ICEPlex system to real-time PCR for the detection of cytomegalovirus (CMV), Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), and BK virus (BKV). The sensitivities of the ICEPlex were 83.3%, 95.5%, and 65.5% for the detection of CMV, EBV, and BKV, respectively. Interestingly, the multiplex assay detected dual infections in 16/280 (5.7%) samples tested.

Two polyomaviruses, BK virus (BKV) and JC virus (JCV), are ubiquitous in the human population, generally infecting children asymptomatically and then persisting in renal tissue. It is generally thought that reactivation leads to productive infection for both viruses, with progeny shed in the urine. Several studies have shown that the rate of JC viruria increases with the age of the host, but a ...

BK virus (BKV) is a polyomavirus that is able to cause renal dysfunction in transplanted grafts via BK virus-associated nephritis (BKVAN). This condition was mis-diagnosed in the past due to clinical and histopthological similarities with acute rejection. Due to the prevalence of the virus in the population, it is an important pathogen in this context, and so it is important to understand how t...

Enzyme immunoassays (ELISA) have been developed for the detection of BK virus IgG- and IgM-antibodies. Specific IgG is detected by an antigen-coated solid phase test; IgM by an antibody capture method. These methods have been used to study the age-distribution of BK virus antibodies in Tromsø county in Northern Norway. The serum panels tested were: 60 sera from paediatric patients aged 0-1 year...

Immunosuppression is the major risk factor for BK virus nephropathy (BKVN) after renal transplantation (RTx). As the individual tacrolimus (Tac) metabolism rate correlates with Tac side effects, we hypothesized that Tac metabolism might also influence the BKV infection risk. In this case-control study RTx patients with BK viremia within 4 years after RTx (BKV group) were compared with a BKV neg...

OBJECTIVE To evaluate the prevalence of the urinary excretion of BKV and JCV in HIV-infected patients without neurological symptoms. METHODS Urine samples from HIV-infected patients without neurological symptoms were tested for JC virus and BK virus by PCR. Samples were screened for the presence of polyomavirus with sets of primers complementary to the early region of JCV and BKV genome (AgT)...

background bk virus (bkv) belongs to the human polyomaviridae and the primary bkv infection is occurred during childhood then the virus could be latent through life, especially in the kidneys and urinary system. it became reactive after an immunocompromised status, such as pregnancy or transplantation. isolated bkv from different locations of the world is grouped into four subtypes using serolo...

Polyoma BK virus (BKV)-associated nephropathy (PVAN) is a relevant cause of poor renal allograft survival. In a prospective analysis, we monitored BKV DNA in blood and urine samples from 62 consecutive pediatric kidney recipients. In patients with BKV replication, we analyzed the impact of reduction of maintenance immunosuppression on viral load kinetics and PVAN in patients with BKV replicatio...

SV40 has been associated with mesothelioma development. The possible role of the closely related human polyomaviruses JC virus (JCV) and BK virus (BKV) in mesothelioma remained unclear. We found that JCV did not infect human mesothelial cells. BKV and SV40 infected mesothelial cells, expressed viral oncoproteins, and caused similar alterations of key cell regulatory genes. BKV replicated faster...

GUIDELINES a. We suggest screening high risk kidney transplant recipients for BK polyoma virus (BKV) with quantitative plasma NAT. The frequency of screening is not clear however the risk is higher in the early post transplant period. (2C) The frequency of screening suggested by KDIGO is a reasonable option as follows: i. monthly for the first 3–6 months after transplantation (2D); ii. then eve...
