By enabling a tight control of cell excitation, optogenetics is a powerful approach to study the function of neurons and neural circuits. With its transparent body, a fully mapped nervous system, easily quantifiable behaviors and many available genetic tools, Caenorhabditis elegans is an extremely well-suited model to decipher the functioning logic of the nervous system with optogenetics. Our g...

Nucleosome DNA bendability pattern extracted from large nucleosome DNA database of C. elegans is used for construction of full length (116 dinucleotide positions) nucleosome DNA bendability matrix. The matrix can be used for sequence-directed mapping of the nucleosomes on the sequences. Several alternative positions for a given nucleosome are typically predicted, separated by multiples of nucle...

Lake Sapanca, which is located on the Sakarya-Sapanca-İzmit corridor in NW Turkey, is a freshwater lake with numerous fish farms in its catchment. Palynological analyses including non-pollen palynomorphs of a short (38.5 cm) and a longer sediment core (586 cm), taken in the centre of the lake and dated in previous investigations, revealed the presence of brackish and marine palynomorphs. The lo...

It is often difficult to track the spatio-temporal variability of vegetation distribution in lakes because of the technological limitations associated with mapping using traditional field surveys as well as the lack of a unified field survey protocol. Using a series of Landsat remote sensing images (i.e. MSS, TM and ETM+), we mapped the composition and distribution area of emergent, floating-le...

Most Pantoea spp. have been isolated from plant sources or clinical samples. However, we cultivated Pantoea anthophila 11-2 from hypersaline water from the lake on Laysan, Northwestern Hawaiian Islands. Draft genome sequencing of 11-2 provides a molecular basis for studies in evolution and pathogenicity in Pantoea spp.

Organisms that can grow in extreme conditions would be expected to be confined to extreme environments. However, we were able to capture highly productive communities of algae and bacteria capable of growing in acidic (pH 2), basic (pH 12) and saline (40 ppt) conditions from an ordinary freshwater lake. Microbial communities may thus include taxa that are highly productive in conditions that ar...

Total suspended matter is an important water quality parameter, and plays a key role in water quality evaluation, especially of inland waters. Many different methods have been developed to estimate TSM from remote sensing data, in which empirical methods and model-based methods are two types of commonly used methods. Compared with empirical methods, model-based methods have the advantages of de...

Paranoá Lake is a man-made reservoir, created in 1959 with the city of Brasilia, the capital of Brazil. The lake has a surface area of 38 Km 2 and an watershed area of 1046 Km, of which approximately 8% is agricultural. Around 450,000 people live in the catchment area. Contamination of Paranoá Lake and other water systems with organochlorine (OC) insecticides has been reported (Dianese et al., ...
