The chicken embryo represents a suitable model for studying vertebrate sex determination and gonadal sex differentiation. While the basic mechanism of sex determination in birds is still unknown, gonadal morphogenesis is very similar to that in mammals, and most of the genes implicated in mammalian sex determination have avian homologues. However, in the chicken embryo, these genes show some in...

Primary chicken embryo cell cultures were evaluated a s an alternate cell system for the production of attenuated Venezuelan equine encephalomyelitis (TC-83 strain) vaccine. The TC-83 strain virus was shown to remain stable during 10 serial passages in chicken embryo cell culture with regard to plaque size and morphology, virus yield, potency, and virulence for mice and hamsters.

Methenamine salts have been traditionally used in the veterinary and human medicine, but its use is sometimes associated with some side effects.Toxicopathological effects of methenamine salt have always been a major concern. There is scantly information available about the lesions of methenamine compound in embryo. The objective of this study was to determine the teratogenic effects of methenam...

The enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP) pEGFP-N1-P53 eukaryotic expression vector, which contains the human tumor suppressor p53, was constructed and transfected into chicken fibroblast cells and stage-X blastoderm to analyze the transfection efficiency. The complementary DNA of the human p53 gene was cloned by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction from human peripheral blood an...

The propagation of infectious laryngotracheitis virus (ILTV) has been described using primary cell cultures derived from chicken embryo liver and kidney or embryonated eggs, but these cultures use Specific Pathogen Free (SPF) eggs that are time and cost expensive. Since cell line cultures are easier to maintain in laboratory conditions, the growth of ILTV was evaluated in five different cell cu...

Avian sarcoma viruses (ASV) produced by Japanese quail embryo fibroblasts (QEF) were inactivated to the same degree as ASV produced by chick embryo fibroblasts (CEF), with or without complement, by rabbit antisera to CEF and to membrane antigens of chick embryo and adult chicken erythrocytes, in particular their unique age-specific antigens. ASV produced by duck embryo fibroblasts (DEF) were on...

Considering the high proportion of polyunsaturated fatty acids, the antioxidant defense of chick embryo tissues is vital during the oxidative stress experienced at hatching. In order to better understand the mechanisms of the defense system during chicken embryo development, we detected the activity of antioxidant enzymes during the incubation of chicken embryo. Results showed that the activity...

We used a double-label method, which monitors the rate at which cells enter S-phase of the cell cycle, to identify factors that control the growth of chicken embryo lens epithelial cells in vivo. With this assay, we identified a mitogen for lens epithelial cells in the anterior segment of the embryonic eye. When the anterior chamber was opened briefly, by tearing the cornea or displacing the le...

Pretreatment of chicken embryo cells with homologous but not heterologous interferon inhibits the synthesis of vaccinia virus early messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA). This inhibition is seen in the presence of cycloheximide, i.e., in the absence of protein synthesis, suggesting that the virion-bound transcriptase may be the target of the antiviral activity associated with interferon treatment. ...
