We determined the cellular distribution and the amount of chromogranin A in endocrine cells of bovine pancreas using a polyclonal antibody against bovine adrenomedullary chromogranin A. The relative amounts of chromogranin A in the different cells of the endocrine pancreas were determined by computer-assisted analyses of the optical densities of the immunoreactivities in the stained sections. M...

Chromogranin A is a major component of storage granules in many different secretory cell types. After [35S]methionine labelling of proteins from cultured bovine chromaffin cells, chromogranin A was immunoprecipitated with specific antibodies, and the radioactivity incorporated into chromogranin A was determined and used as an index of its synthesis rate. Depolarization of cells with nicotine or...

Considering that the determination of chromogranin levels in the blood for the diagnosis of pheochromocytoma will provide clinically useful information, an attempt was made to establish the serological assay system for blood chromogranin, and also chromogranin levels in the blood of normal subjects, patients with essential hypertension and a patient with pheochromocytoma were studied. Chromogra...

"There appears to be a direct correlation between tumor burden and serum CgA levels. Rising serum levels of CgA can predeed radiographic evidence of recurrence. . . . .Using serum CgA level above 30 U/ml, one is able to discriminate between disease free patients and those with recurrent metastatic disease with a sensitivity of 92% and specificity of 96%. This is superior to measuring urinary 5-...

Expression of dense-core granules, a typical exocytic organelle, is widely believed to be controlled by coordinate gene expression mechanisms specific to neurones and neurosecretory cells. Recent studies in PC12 cells, however, have suggested the number of granules/cells depends on the levels of only one of their cargo proteins, chromogranin A, regulating the metabolism of the other proteins, a...

This report presents a grammar for the procedural modeling of humanoid characters and poses based on CGA shape, a shape grammar for computer generated architecture. Various models can be derived with the same set of parametrized rules for geometric operations, and include a skeletal system for posing. The main part of this report defines basic rules and their effect on shapes and skeletons and ...

The discovery of programmed -1 frameshifting at the hexanucleotide shift site CGA_AAG, in addition to the classical X_XXY_YYZ heptanucleotide shift sequences, prompted a search for instances among eubacterial insertion sequence elements. IS1222 has a CGA_AAG shift site. A genetic analysis revealed that frameshifting at this site is required for transposition.

This article examines the deferral value of an estate freeze. To be more specific, it models the value of the deferral of tax on future growth. From this model, we * Ling Chu is of Arthur Andersen LLP, Toronto; Glenn Feltham is of the University of Saskatchewan; and Robert Mathieu is of Wilfrid Laurier University. We would like to thank seminar participants at the University of Saskatchewan, th...

Decreased body temperature during hibernation evokes a neuroprotective effect against the frequent neurodegenerative events of ischemic/reperfusion injuries. This neuroprotection appears to stem from a direct involvement of orexin-A plus the sympathoinhibitory neuroactive peptide catestatin on orexin 2 receptor-dependent feeding and motor behaviors of the facultative hibernating hamster.

The olfactory bulb of the rat contains chromogranin A at a similar level as the adrenal gland or the hypophysis as revealed by immunoblots. Olfactory chromogranin A also displays the same size as chromogranin A of endocrine cells. In the hippocampus and other brain regions, we could not detect chromogranin A by immunoblotting. In contrast, chromogranin A messenger ribonucleic acid (using S1 nuc...
