US Civil War data allow examinations of theories of leadership. By observing both leaders and followers during the war and 40 years after it, I establish that the most able became wartime leaders, that leading by example from the front was an effective strategy in reducing desertion rates, and that leaders later migrated to the larger cities because this is where their superior skills would hav...

The notion of business development as a partial cure to the economic condition of blacks is not a new one, but black leaders have never unanimously agreed that business ownership is an effective instrument of economic success. The violence and civil disorders of the 1960s, however, spurred strong interest in programs to develop and promote both urban black business and black-owned and controlle...

In this paper, we present new structural results about the existence of a subgraph where the degrees of the vertices are pre-specified. Further, we use these results to prove a 16-edge-weighting version of a conjecture by Karoński, Luczak and Thomason, an asymptotic 2-edge-weighting version of the same conjecture, and a 7/8 version of Louigi’s Conjecture.

It appears that for t ≥ 6 the structure of large (t− 1)-connected graphs with no Kt minor is prohibitively complicated. Moreover, for t ≥ 8 the assumption in the above conjecture that |V (G)| is large is also necessary. In fact, Thomason has shown that there exist Θ(t √ log t)-connected graphs with no Kt-minor, but all known examples are bounded in size by a function of t. Thus, the conditions ...

In the first address to the French Parliament by a U.S. President since Woodrow Wilson, in June 1994 President Bill Clinton spoke of the growing challenge posed by nationalism to international order. In decided contrast to Wilson, who came to Paris after World War I to champion the idea of national self-determination, Clinton arrived after the cold war to warn how nationalism undermines interna...
