We report the case of a girl-child who manifested the clinicoradiographic features of pseudorheumatoid arthritis. 3D-CT scan of the craniocervical junction showed distinctive features of dystopic type of os odontoideum. The report highlights the necessity to explore the craniocervical junction in patients with progressive pseudorheumatoid arthropathy.
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study is to determine the efficiency of artificial intelligence in detecting craniocervical junction injuries by using an artificial neural network (ANN) that may be applicable in future studies of different traumatic injuries. MATERIALS AND METHODS Major head trauma patients with Glasgow Coma Scale <or=8 of all age groups who presented to the Emergency Department we...
OBJECT The choice of surgical technique for decompressive surgery in patients with Chiari I malformation is controversial. Good preliminary postoperative outcomes have been achieved in patients with Chiari I malformation (without syringomyelia) after using a dura-splitting technique. The authors evaluated safety, resource use, and early outcome after this surgery in patients without syringomyel...
OBJECT In this retrospective analysis, the authors report a prospective study in which intraoperative ultrasonography was used to determine the extent of surgery necessary during posterior fossa decompression surgery for Chiari malformation Type I (CM-I) in children. METHODS Between 1995 and 2003, posterior fossa decompression was performed in 149 patients (mean 5.9 years of age, range 9 mont...
STUDY DESIGN This is a cross-sectional analysis of resonance magnetic images of 111 patients with craniocervical malformations and those of normal subjects. OBJECTIVE To test the hypothesis that atlas assimilation is associated with basilar invagination (BI) and atlas's anterior arch assimilation is associated with craniocervical instability and type I BI. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA Atlas a...
BACKGROUND The authors hypothesized that craniocervical extension occurs during normal mouth opening. METHODS Twenty volunteers were studied. Interdental distance was measured at four different degrees of craniocervical extension. RESULTS Interdental distance increased from 28 mm (95% confidence interval, 25-30) in slight flexion to 46 mm (95% confidence interval, 42-49) at full extension. ...
BACKGROUND Tuberculosis (TB) of the craniocervical junction is rare even where the condition is endemic. It poses problems in both diagnosis and management if not managed in time it may cause life-threatening complications. CASE DESCRIPTION An 18-year-old male patient presented with pain in the nape of the neck since 12 months duration which was not improving with medication. After magnetic r...
