We report the case of cutaneous sarcoidosis of lichenoid type successfully treated with pimecrolimus. For the first time in the literature, we propose the use of this topical calcineurin inhibitor for the treatment of the cases refractory to common therapy regimens.
A 43-year-old woman presented with erythematous papules and plaques on the forehead evolving in the previous 3 months (Fig. 1). Diascopy, by showing a yellowish nodule-like aspect (Fig. 2), raised the hypothesis of cutaneous sarcoidosis, which was confirmed by histopathological examination. Sarcoidosis is a multisystemic granulomatous disease, a histologically evident characteristic shared by i...
Sarcoidosis is a multisystem granulomatous disease of unknown etiology and pathogenesis with a chronic course characterized by multiple remissions and relapses. Besides a brief review of relevant literature, this paper reports on a 70-year-old Saudi male patient who presented with a rare form of cutaneous sarcoidosis masquerading as psoriasis. Physical examination revealed presence of multiple,...
OBJECTIVE To investigate clinical characteristics and treatment effect of sarcoidosis with cutaneous lesions in Chinese patients, and to compare them with previous works. METHODS Retrospective analysis was conducted based on clinical manifestations, systemic examinations and treatment of biopsy-proved 36 patients with sarcoidosis with cutaneous lesions in our hospital since 2000. Patients wer...
Sarcoidosis is a multisystem granulomatous disease, with an inadequately defined etiology affecting several organ systems. Cutaneous lesions provide important visible clues and an easily accessible source of tissue for histologic examination to reach early diagnosis and management. Along with a brief literature review, we report two cases presenting with rare forms of psoriasiform and annular s...
Although rare, ulcerative sarcoidosis is an acknowledged morphologic variant of cutaneous sarcoidosis encountered in both the United States and worldwide, particularly in patients with skin of color. Herein, we present a patient with prototypical ulcerative sarcoidosis to highlight this unusual presentation of a relatively rare cutaneous condition. We also review 34 additional cases drawn from ...
The paradoxical adverse effects of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) antagonists have been described frequently as a result of the widespread use of these drugs. Among the TNF-alpha blocking agents, few reports exist relating the use of adalimumab in cutaneous sarcoidosis, although all of them show good results. More recently, sarcoidosis onsets have been reported with various TNF-alpha i...
Sarcoidosis is a multisystemic granulomatous disease of unknown aetiology that usually presents with bilateral hiliar adenopathies, pulmonary infiltrations, and ocular and cutaneous lesions. The specific cutaneous lesions, or granulomatous, are produced in from 9% to 37% of patients with systemic sarcoidosis. Nevertheless, few patients have been described having specific lesions from sarcoidosi...
Sarcoidosis is an idiopathic multisystemic disorder with variable cutaneous presentations that are classified as specific or non-specific according to the presence of non-caseating granulomas on histologic examination. Specific manifestations can include papules, scar sarcoidosis, ulcers, or even alopecia. Herein, we present a case of cutaneous sarcoidosis that presented as multiple erythematou...
Subcutaneous sarcoidosis is a rare variant of cutaneous sarcoidosis, which typically presents as single or multiple, indurated, illdefined plaques, typically on the upper extremities. Granulomas consisting of macrophages with multinucleated giant cells and sparse lymphocytic inflammation are confined to the subcutaneous tissue, rather than to their usual location within the dermis in typical le...
