BACKGROUND Taenia solium cysticercosis is an important zoonosis in many developing countries. Human neurocysticercosis is recognised as an important cause of epilepsy in regions where the parasite occurs. However, it is largely underreported and there is a lack of data about the disease burden. Because a body of information on human and porcine cysticercosis in Cameroon is becoming available, t...

Taenia solium infection causes severe neurological disease in humans. Even though infection and exposure to swine cysticercosis is scattered throughout endemic villages, location of the tapeworm only explains some of the nearby infections and is not related to location of seropositive pigs. Other players might be involved in cysticercosis transmission. In this study we hypothesize that pigs tha...

Between 2005 and 2008 cysticercosis caused by Cysticercus bovis was detected in 1485 (0.44%) animals out of 335 436 heads of cattle slaughtered in the Lublin province. This particular cysticercosis was observed each year. In the period 2005-2008 cysticercosis caused by Cysticercus cellulosae was found only in a few pigs (93 cases--0.0059% out of 1 577 370 examined pigs).

Cysticercosis is the most common parasitic disease of the nervous system. The disease occurs when humans become the intermediate host in the life cycle of Taenia solium by ingesting its eggs from contaminated food. The most common sites of involvement of cysticerci are soft tissue, eye and central nervous system. Unusual location of the cysts may result in uncommon manifestations. Ocular cystic...

We analyzed demographic and clinical data and estimated the incidence of cysticercosis in Shandong Province, China, during 1975-2014. Our analyses showed that a cysticercosis-endemic area is present in Shandong Province, especially in its western regions. Improved surveillance and control are needed to address the elevated risk for cysticercosis in this region.

Taenia solium is an important zoonosis in many developing countries. Cysticercosis poses a serious public health risk and incurs sizeable economic losses to pig production. Because data on the epidemiology of porcine cysticercosis in Mozambique are scarce, the present study was conducted to determine the prevalence and risk factors for porcine cysticercosis. A cross-sectional survey was carried...

OBJECTIVES Taenia solium Cysticercosis is a leading cause of epilepsy and neurological disability in the developing world. It is caused by ingestion of the eggs of the tapeworm, T. solium Taeniasis. The prevalence of either T. solium Cysticercosis or T. solium Taeniasis in the United States in populations at risk is poorly understood. The primary objectives of this study are to perform the firs...

The recent report on ptosis and cysticercosis is very interesting (Labh et al, 2013). The authors mentioned that that was a rare presentation of cysticercosis and also noted that “extraocular cysticercosis could be treated with oral steroid and albendazole”. Indeed, cysticercosis is a tissue infection and can be seen at any organ including the eyes. The ocular presentation of cysticercosis is n...

Cysticercosis is an infection of muscles in cattle and buffaloes, which occurs due to the larval stage of Taenia saginata. Cysticercosis has worldwide distribution but is more common in developing countries due to poor hygienic measures. Hematological and biochemical tests may be used as alternate for the diagnosis of cysticercosis within the local setting. The present study was aimed to invest...

The establishment of reliable serological methods for cysticercosis in pigs is important for the surveillance, control and prevention of taeniosis/cysticercosis in humans as well as in pigs to prevent economic loss. Both ELISA and immunoblot using glycoproteins (GPs) purified by a single step of preparative iso-electric focusing, which are highly useful for human cysticercosis, have been applie...
