In classical cross-country skiing, diagonal stride (DIA) is the major uphill sub-technique, while double poling (DP) is used on relatively flat terrain. Although, the dependence of incline and speed on the preference of either sub-technique seems clearly established, the mechanisms behind these preferences are not clear. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to compare kinetics and energy co...

Diabetes mellitus is one of the most common causes of neuropathy. Although antioxidant and antidiabetic effects of the aqueous extract of purslane (Portulaca oleracea) (AEOP) have been demonstrated before by other researchers, we did not find any study that assessed the psychobiological effects of AEOP in diabetes induced animals. Thirty ovariectomized (OVX) female Wistar rats were randomly div...

Due to health concerns about phthalate esters, the use of alternative plasticizers is being considered. Phthalate esters enhance skin sensitization to fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC) in mouse models. We have demonstrated that phthalate esters stimulate transient receptor potential ankyrin 1 (TRPA1) cation channels expressed on sensory neurons. We also found a correlation between TRPA1 activat...

The aim of this study was to evaluate whether recombinant human insulin-like growth factor I (rhIGF-I) could attenuate or prevent diaphragm (DIA) fiber atrophy with corticosteroid (CS) administration to emphysematous (EMP) hamsters. DIA muscle IGF-I responses to CS administration with and without exogenous rhIGF-I administration were evaluated. Three groups were studied: 1) EMP; 2) EMP + triamc...

Acute intermittent hypoxia (AIH) elicits a form of respiratory plasticity known as long-term facilitation (LTF). Here, we tested four hypotheses in unanesthetized, spontaneously breathing rats using radiotelemetry for EEG and diaphragm electromyography (Dia EMG) activity: 1) AIH induces LTF in Dia EMG activity; 2) diaphragm LTF (Dia LTF) is more robust during sleep vs. wakefulness; 3) AIH (or r...

Fournier, Mario, and Michael I. Lewis. Influences of IGF-I gene disruption on the cellular profile of the diaphragm. Am J Physiol Endocrinol Metab 278: E707–E715, 2000.—The impact of a targeted disruption of the Igf1 gene, encoding the insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I), on diaphragm (DIA) cellularity was studied in 2-mo-old homozygous mutant [IGF-I(2/2)] mice and their wild-type [WT; i.e., I...

The physical interaction of the plasma membrane with the associated cortical cytoskeleton is important in many morphogenetic processes during development. At the end of the syncytial blastoderm of Drosophila the plasma membrane begins to fold in and forms the furrow canals in a regular hexagonal pattern. Every furrow canal leads the invagination of membrane between adjacent nuclei. Concomitantl...

A fluid analysis of the excitation of dust ion-acoustic (DIA) waves in a collisional dusty plasma is presented. The DIA waves are excited by a relative drift of the electrons and ions produced by a steady-state electric field applied to the plasma. The DIA instability is more easily excited if the relative concentration of negatively charged dust is increased.

Tonic and phasic inspiratory genioglossus (GG) electromyographic activity (EMG) was recorded from 13 anesthetized rabbits during unstimulated breathing. Integrated GG EMG peaked earlier in inspiration and presented a more rounded contour than integrated diaphragmatic (DIA) EMG. Spontaneous augmented deep inspirations (sighs) showed a biphasic pattern in both GG and DIA EMGs. Hyperventilation ab...
