Two new p-cymene based diphenols (1-2) were isolated from the heartwood of Calocedrus decurrans. Structures were elucidated by 1D and 2D NMR techniques and HRMS. Libocedroquinone (3) was also isolated as a natural product for the first time. A new system of nomenclature is proposed for description of such oligomeric p-cymene derivatives.
Red clover (Trifolium pratense) leaves accumulate several mumol g(-1) fresh weight of phaselic acid [2-O-(caffeoyl)-l-malate]. Postharvest oxidation of such o-diphenols to o-quinones by endogenous polyphenol oxidases prevents breakdown of forage protein during storage. Forage crops like alfalfa (Medicago sativa) lack both polyphenol oxidase and o-diphenols, and breakdown of their protein upon h...
Tetrahydrobiopterine (6BH(4)) can diminish the oxidative stress undergone by keratinocytes and melanocytes by reducing the o-quinones generated by the oxidation of the corresponding o-diphenols. We found that 6BH(4) and their analogs reduced all the o-quinones studied. The formal potentials of different quinone/diphenol pairs indicate that the o-quinones with withdrawing groups are more potent ...
Photosynthetic oxygen reduction by isolated chloroplast lamellar systems has been studied with the aid of superoxide dismutase. Two mechanisms of oxygen reduction by illuminated chloroplast lamellar systems can be differentiated: 1. In the presence of low potential electron acceptors like AQ or MV the superoxide free radical ion is the product of autooxidation of the reduced acceptor. Addition ...
The dry olive residue (DOR) obtained from the olive oil extraction process has toxic components against plants and microorganism growth, particularly monomeric phenols. In this investigation nine saprobic fungi were found to be capable of completely removing these phenols from the solid after 20 weeks of growth, although the rate depended on the type of fungi and phenol. Results showed that mos...
An amperometric biosensor based on the enzyme polyphenoloxidase (PPO), which makes the bioelectrocatalysis of phenolic compounds, was developed and optimized using cathecol as substrate. Polyethersulphone membranes were used for enzyme immobilization. Polyphenoloxidase oxidizes monophenols (cresolase activity) and diphenols (catecholase activity) into the corresponding o-quinones; the o-quinone...
Tyrosinase exhibits catalytic activity for the ortho-hydroxylation of monophenols to diphenols as well as their subsequent oxidation to quinones. Owing to polymerization of these quinones, brown-coloured high-molecular-weight compounds called melanins are generated. The latent precursor form of polyphenol oxidase 4, one of the six tyrosinase isoforms from Agaricus bisporus, was purified to homo...
A method has been developed for the synthesis of semicrystalline poly(arylene ether ether sulfide) materials by first preparing a soluble, amorphous sulfoxide containing precursor, then rapidly reducing the sulfoxide moiety to sulfide. The sulfoxide polymers are synthesized using conventional nucleophilic aromatic substitution reactions between difluorodiphenyl sulfoxide and diphenols. Reductio...
