A thermolabile direct hemolysin from an El Tor cholera vibrio strain has been isolated and partially characterized as a simple protein of ca. 20,000 molecular weight. In addition to its hemolytic activity, the hemolysin is cytotoxic, cardiotoxic, and rapidly lethal. In these respects it resembles the thermostable direct hemolysin/cytotoxin/cardiotoxin/lethal toxin of Vibrio parahaemolyticus and...

Removal of the white cells and platelets from suspensions of red cells usually produces substantial reduction in the hemolytic activity of venoms. Guinea pig red cells constitute a notable exception and may be lysed by a direct action of venom. White blood cells and platelets appear to contribute to hemolysis by serving as sources of phosphatides for the formation of lysophosphatides. No correl...

Polygenic IgG autoantibodies are implicated in majority of the cases of warm autoimmune hemolytic anemia (WAIHA). In some of these cases, complement (C3) proteins accompany the IgG antibodies. WAIHA mediated by C3 alone is relatively rare. We present an interesting case of WAIHA with a direct antiglobulin test (DAT) positive for C3 but negative for IgG in a 79-year-old woman and perform an anal...

Auto-immune hemolytic anemia (AIHA) has an extensive differential diagnosis though Hodgkin’s lymphoma (HL) is not always an obvious diagnosis. AIHA can precede the diagnosis of HL for several years. In adults the association of AIHA and HL is more frequent in advanced stages of HL. Warm immune hemolytic anemia is mainly controlled with steroids and chemotherapy. We report a case of a patient wi...

BACKGROUND Autoimmune hemolytic anemia is a rare condition in children. Little is known about its initial presentation and the subsequent progression of the disease. DESIGN AND METHODS Since 2004, a national observational study has been aiming to thoroughly describe cases and identify prognostic factors. Patients from all French hematologic pediatric units have been included if they had a hem...

Abstract   Introduction: Hemoglobin Constant Spring (Hb CS),  a abnormal Hb characterized by elongated α-globin chain resulting from mutations of the termination codon in the α2 - globin gene , is the most common nondelitional  α-thalassemic mutation and is an important cause of HbH like disease in Southeast Asia. Case Report: A 9- years-old female with immune hemolytic anemia and splenomegally...

Severe hemolytic anemia in patients with disseminated tuberculosis is exceedingly rare. We report an episode of Coombs'-positive hemolytic anemia in a previously healthy young man with miliary tuberculosis, resulting in a hemoglobin level of 5 g/dL and an undetectable haptoglobin level. The patient responded well to treatment with antituberculosis drugs, and the results of the direct Coombs' te...

We describe the first case of cefotetan-induced immune hemolytic anemia (IHA) following sacrocolpopexy. A 65-year-old female status post uncomplicated sacrocolpopexy presented on postoperative day 15 for worsening fatigue. Her exam was notable jaundice and icteric sclerae. Hemoglobin hematocrit were 5.5 g/dL 17.2%, respectively direct anti-globin test positive.

BACKGROUND Melatonin therapy shows positive effects on neuroprotective factor brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) expression and neuronal apoptosis in neonatal hemolytic hyperbilirubinemia. We hypothesized that melatonin promotes BDNF expression and anti-apoptotic effects in neonatal hemolytic hyperbilirubinemia through a phospholipase (PLC)-mediated mechanism. MATERIAL AND METHODS A pheny...
