Dispersive hydrodynamics is the domain of applied mathematics and physics concerned with fluid motion in which internal friction, e.g., viscosity, is negligible relative to wave dispersion. In conservative media such as superfluids, optical materials, and water waves, nonlinearity has the tendency to engender wavebreaking that is mitigated by dispersion. The mathematical framework for such medi...
Using microscopic models in which both photons and excitons are treated as microscopic degrees of freedom, we discuss polaritons of two cases: One is the case when excitonic parameters are time dependent. The time dependence causes creation of polaritons from a “false vacuum.” It is shown that both the creation sepctra and the creation efficiency are much different from the results of the previ...

A statistical approach of the propagation of solitons in media with spatially random dispersive perturbations is developed. Applying the inverse scattering transform several regimes are put into evidence which are determined by the mass and the velocity of the incoming soliton and also by the correlation length of the perturbation. Namely, the mass of the soliton is almost conserved if it is in...
In this article, the propagation of digital and analog signals through media which, in general, are both dissipative and dispersive is modeled using the one-dimensional telegraph equation. Input signals are represented using impulsive, Heaviside unit step, Gaussian, rectangular pulse, and both unmodulated and modulated sinusoidal pulse type boundary data. Applications to coaxial transmission li...
We analyze dark solitons supported by second-order parametric interactions between the fundamental and second harmonics in the presence of dispersion and group-velocity mismatch. We reveal various types of solitary waves, including a family of two-wave dark solitons propagating on a modulationally stable background, dark solitons with nonmonotonic tails, and bound states of dark solitons.

In this paper we develop a method for synthetic-aperture radar (SAR) imaging through a dispersive medium. We consider the case when the sensor and scatterers are embedded in a known homogeneous dispersive material, the scene to be imaged lies on a known surface and the radar antenna flight path is an arbitrary but known smooth curve. The scattering is modeled using a linearized (Born) scalar mo...
A systematic shift of the photon recoil momentum due to the index of refraction of a dilute gas of atoms has been observed. The recoil frequency was determined with a two-pulse light grating interferometer using near-resonant laser light. The results show that the recoil momentum of atoms caused by the absorption of a photon is n variant Planck's k, where n is the index of refraction of the gas...
