In head and neck squamous cell carcinoma distant metastases are rare and metastases to the heart are extremely rare. In this report we present a patient with a sublingual and laryngeal carcinoma with metastases to lung and heart. Cardiac metastases present with non-specific symptoms that depends on the size and location of the metastases. The ideal tools for diagnosing cardiac metastases are ec...

Polymorphous low grade adenocarcinomas (PLGAs) are thought to be indolent tumours that are localised preferentially to the palate and affect the minor salivary glands almost exclusively. Metastases to locoregional lymph nodes occur in only 6-10% of cases. Recently, two cases of PLGA with microscopically confirmed distant metastases have been reported. This study reports a third case of PLGA wit...

OBJECTIVE To evaluate positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) and conventional imaging tests for the detection of distant metastases in patients with locally advanced breast cancer. MATERIALS AND METHODS We included 81 patients with breast cancer who had undergone 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) PET/CT before treatment. Conventional imaging included the following: bone scintigr...

Most intracranial and intraspinal meningiomas are benign. Aggressive "malignant" behavior of intracranial meningiomas, with distant metastases usually to the lungs, has been well described [1-4]. We report a rare case of intraspinal meningioma with distant metastases to the lungs. Our review of the literature revealed only one other case of intraspinal meningioma with metastases to the lung [5].

Eccrine carcinoma is an extremely rare malignant skin cancer arising from eccrine sweat glands with a high metastatic potential. It mainly occurs in the elderly, with equal incidence in both sexes. It usually spreads to regional lymph nodes, with liver, lungs, and bones being the most common sites of distant metastasis. Because of tumor rarity, little is known about the value of F18- FDG PET/CT...

Background and Objective: Most patients with papillary carcinoma of the thyroid gland (PTC) have favorable outcome, but since it has severe capability to invade the nearby tissues, there is a great risk of regional and distal lymph-nodes (LNs) metastases related to poor prognostic parameters, early recurrences, and distant metastasis that lead to bad patient outcome. ...

AIM This is the first study to investigate patients with metastatic spinal cord compression (MSCC) from hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). PATIENTS AND METHODS Eight patients were analyzed with regard to survival and motor dysfunction. RESULTS Out of seven factors (age, affected vertebrae, ambulatory status, bone lesions, other distant metastases, time developing motor dysfunction, performance...

Regional lymph node metastases in colorectal cancer (CRC) decrease outcome. Whether nodal metastases function as a biomarker, i.e. as a sign of advanced disease, or are in fact involved in the metastatic process is unclear. We evaluated metastatic patterns of CRC according to the lymph node status of the primary tumor.A retrospective review of 1393 patients with metastatic CRC who underwent aut...

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS To define the incidence and risk factors of metastatic disease and the effectiveness of salvage therapy in esthesioneuroblastoma (ENB). STUDY DESIGN Retrospective analysis of 57 patients presenting from 1979 through 2009. METHODS Cumulative incidence of neck failure, distant failure, and survival were assessed using the Kaplan-Meier method. RESULTS Overall survival f...

BACKGROUND Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is a locally aggressive tumor with a high prevalence of distant metastases. The purpose of this study was to identify independent predictors of outcome and to characterize the patterns of failure. METHODS An international retrospective review was conducted of 489 patients with ACC treated between 1985 and 2011 in 9 cancer centers worldwide. RESULTS ...
