Salmonella typhi, the causative agent of typhoid fever, must invade the human gastrointestinal tract and multiply within the host to cause disease. We have cloned from S. typhi Ty2 a chromosomal region that confers upon Escherichia coli HB101 the ability to invade cultured human intestinal epithelial cells. Three invasion-positive recombinant cosmids were isolated and restriction endonuclease a...

Oral candidiasis is often accompanied by severe inflammation, resulting in a decline in the quality of life of immunosuppressed individuals and elderly people. To develop a new oral therapeutic option for candidiasis, a nonpathogenic commensal oral probiotic microorganism, Streptococcus salivarius K12, was evaluated for its ability to modulate Candida albicans growth in vitro, and its therapeut...

The role of the Bordetella pertussis P.69/pertactin protein in mammalian cell adhesion and invasion was investigated. Salmonella strains expressing surface-associated P.69/pertactin from a chromosomally located prn gene were significantly more invasive than isogenic parental strains. This effect was most pronounced in the poorly invasive, semi-rough S. typhimurium strain LB5010. Escherichia col...

Infection with enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) is a major cause of severe infantile diarrhea, particularly in parts of the developing world. The bundle-forming pilus (BFP) of EPEC is an established virulence factor encoded on the EPEC adherence factor plasmid (EAF) and has been implicated in both localized adherence to host cells and bacterial autoaggregation. We investigated the role ...

The two human lymphotrophic γ-herpesviruses, Kaposi's sarcoma herpesvirus (KSHV) and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), are a recognized cause of human cancer, encoding multiple miRs that are major players in carcinogenesis. Previously, we discovered that EBV-encoded miRs transfer between infected B and T lymphocytes. To further explore the biological significance of the spreading of γ-herpesvirus-encod...

K12 is a temperature-sensitive (ts) mutant cell line derived from Chinese hamster fibroblasts. When incubated at the nonpermissive temperature, K12 cells exhibit the following properties: (a) the cells cannot initiate DNA synthesis;o (b) the synthesis of cytosol thymidine kinase is suppressed; and (c) the synthesis of three cellular proteins of molecular weights 94, 78, and 58 kdaltons is great...

introduction to evaluate the expression patterns of cytokeratin (k) 12, 13, and 19 in normal epithelium of the human ocular surface to determine whether k13 could be used as a marker for conjunctival epithelium. methods: total rna was isolated from the human conjunctiva and central cornea. those transcripts that had threefolds or higher expression levels in the conjunctiva than the cornea were ...

This article identifies a number of issues associated with current STEM education reform efforts, especially with regard to efforts to integrate engineering education into the K12 curriculum. Precollege engineering is especially problematic in STEM reform since there is no well-established tradition of engineering in the K12 curriculum. This discussion aims at identifying some of the issues and...

The transformation frequency of Escherichia coli C-600, continuously cultivated in a chemostat operated at constant dilution rate, increased with increase in agitation rate (impeller speed). Cell counts at each impeller speed remained approximately constant. The phenomenon correlated with changes in mean cell volume associated with the changes in agitation rate.
