Since Hebb’s work on the organization of the brain [16] finding cell assemblies in neural spike trains has become a vivid field of research. As modern multi-electrode techniques allow to record the electrical potentials of many neurons in parallel, there is an increasing need for efficient and reliable algorithms to identify assemblies as expressed by synchronous spiking activity. We present a ...

Currently, the study of nociception in humans relies mainly on thermal stimulation of heat-sensitive nociceptive afferents. To circumvent some limitations of thermal stimulation, it was proposed that intra-epidermal electrical stimulation (IES) could be used as an alternative method to activate nociceptors selectively. The selectivity of IES relies on the fact that it can generate a very focal ...

Electrical microstimulation is used widely in experimental neurophysiology to examine causal links between specific brain areas and their behavioral functions and is used clinically to treat neurological and psychiatric disorders in patients. Typically, microstimulation is applied to local brain regions as a train of equally spaced current pulses. We were interested in the sensitivity of a neur...

The selectivity of neurons in sensory cortex can be modified by pairing neuromodulator release with sensory stimulation. Repeated pairing of electrical stimulation of the cholinergic nucleus basalis, for example, induces input specific plasticity in primary auditory cortex (A1). Pairing nucleus basalis stimulation (NBS) with a tone increases the number of A1 neurons that respond to the paired t...

Effects of pulse width on discrimination of simultaneous changes in frequency and level of electrical pulse trains were studied in a monkey subject with a cochlear implant. At test-stimulus levels where performance was minimum, frequency difference limens were larger for longer-duration pulses than that for shorter-duration pulses. Several factors may have contributed to these differences.

We examined the effect of an age-related leftward shift in the force-frequency relationship on the comparative quadriceps fatigability of nine young (27 +/- 1 yr old) and nine old men (78 +/- 1 yr old) during low-frequency electrical stimulation. Two different protocols of intermittent trains (6 pulses on, 650 ms off) of electrical stimulation at 25% maximum voluntary contraction were performed...

Objective(s):To determine the effect of acetylcholine (ACh), pilocarpine, and atropine on pain evoked responses of pain excited neurons (PEN) and pain inhibited neurons (PIN) in hippocampal CA3 region of morphine addicted rats. Materials and Methods:Female Wistar rats, weighing between 230-260 g were used in this study. Morphine addicted rats were generated by subcutaneous injection of increasi...

Ca2+ channel inactivation was investigated in neurohypophysial nerve terminals by using patch-clamp techniques. The contribution of intracellular Ca2+ to inactivation was evaluated by replacing Ca2+ with Ba2+ or by including BAPTA in the internal recording solution. Ca2+ channel inactivation during depolarizing pulses was primarily voltage-dependent. A contribution of intracellular Ca2+ was rev...

We describe here a single-gap isolation method that allows the simultaneous measurement of electrical activity and tension output from fully contracting segments of frog skeletal muscle fibers. By using single pulses and pulse trains of varying frequency (5-100 Hz), records obtained for both electrical and mechanical fiber response demonstrate that the physiological properties of the fiber segm...

The goal of this study is development of a novel signal processing and analysis method for detailed investigation of the time-frequency dynamics of brain cortex electrical activity. The idea of our method of electroencephalograms (EEG) analyzing is in that we consider EEG signal as a composition of so-called wave trains. The wave train term is used to denote a signal localized in time, frequenc...
