The present research represents the first investigations into the development of crosstolerance in the larvae of Diamondback Moth (DBM) tolerant to Bacillus thuringiensis toxin (Bt-toxin: Dipel) and treated with different concentrations of the entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana (strain BbGHA). Significant differences (at P = 0.05) were obtained between the fungus concentrations used for...

Dialeurodes citri is a major pest in citrus producing areas, and large-scale outbreaks have occurred increasingly often in recent years. Lecanicillium attenuatum is an important entomopathogenic fungus that can parasitize and kill D. citri. We separated the fungus from corpses of D. citri larvae. However, the sound immune defense system of pests makes infection by an entomopathogenic fungus dif...

Hemiberlesia pitysophila Takagi is an extremely harmful exotic insect in forest to Pinus species, including Pinus massoniana. Using both morphological taxonomy and molecular phylogenetics, we identified 15 strains of entomogenous fungi, which belong to 9 genera with high diversities. Surprisingly, we found that five strains that were classified as species of Pestalotiopsis, which has been consi...

After heavy rainfalls in late Apr. of 2010 in Tehran, an epizootic occurred amongst hoverflies (Eupeodes corollae Fabricius) population in green spaces of Iranian Research Institute of Plant Protection, caused by an entomopathogenic fungus. Infected flies fixed to the upper parts of whitetop (Lepidium draba L.) and small tumbleweed mustard (Sisymbrium loeslii L.) plants with their proboscis and...

Ant queens that attempt to disperse and found new colonies independently face high mortality risks. The exposure of queens to soil entomopathogens during claustral colony founding may be particularly harmful, as founding queens lack the protection conferred by mature colonies. Here, we tested the hypotheses that founding queens (I) detect and avoid nest sites that are contaminated by fungal pat...

Over the past 50 years, repeated attempts have been made to develop biological control technologies for use against economically important species of subterranean termites, focusing primarily on the use of the entomopathogenic fungus Metarhizium anisopliae. However, no successful field implementation of biological control has been reported. Most previous work has been conducted under the assump...

An entomopathogenic fungus, Entomophaga maimaiga, was found causing an extensive epizootic in outbreak populations of the gypsy moth, Lymantria dispar, throughout many forested and residential areas of the northeastern United States. This is the first recognized occurrence of this or any entomophthoralean fungus in North American gypsy moths, and its appearance was coincident with an abnormally...

New beauvericins have been synthesized using the nonribosomal peptide synthetase BbBEAS from the entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana. Chemical diversity was generated by in vitro chemoenzymatic and in vivo whole cell biocatalytic syntheses using either a B. bassiana mutant or an E. coli strain expressing the bbBeas gene.

Lecanicillium psalliotae is an entomopathogenic, mycoparasitical, and nematophagous fungus known to produce antibiotic and antifungal compounds. Here, we report the first 36-Mb draft genome sequence of L. psalliotae strain HWLR35. The draft genome contains 197 scaffolds and is predicted to have 11,009 protein-coding genes.

Nomuraea rileyi (Farlow) Samson is an entomopathogenic fungus capable of producing a variety of enzymes including proteases and chitinases. Protease derived from microorganisms such as fungi, bacteria, and yeast has established wide spread applications in fields such as in the food, detergent and other industries. This study investigates the strategy for partial purification and characterizatio...
