A new model is presented for a step-index fiber in the form of an equivalent slab guiding structure. This model simplifies the analysis of fiber directional couplers and coupler half-blocks with dielectric and metallic superstrates. Simple empirical formulas to obtain the model parameters are also given. The use of this model is illustrated with some numerical examples.

A new scheme for generating amplitude squeezed light by means of soliton self-phase modulation is experimentally demonstrated. By injecting 180-fs pulses into an equivalent Mach-Zehnder fiber interferometer, a maximum noise reduction of 4.4± 0.3 dB is obtained (6.3± 0.6 dB when corrected for losses). The dependence of noise reduction on the interferometer splitting ratio and fiber length is stu...

Vector formalism for stimulated Brillouin scattering amplification in birefringent fibers is used to model the fiber as an equivalent, pseudo-linear, polarization-dependent gain medium. Implications on slow and fast light setups are discussed. ©2009 Optical Society of America OCIS codes: (290.5900) Scattering, stimulated Brillouin; (120.5410) Polarimetry; (060.2300) Fiber measurements.

We present the design of a short broadband fiber directional coupler for terahertz (THz) radiation and demonstrate a 3 dB coupler with a bandwidth of 0.6 THz centered at 1.4 THz. The broadband coupling is achieved by mechanically downdoping the cores of a dual-core photonic crystal fiber by microstructuring the cores. This is equivalent to chemical downdoping but is easier to realize experiment...

BACKGROUND AND AIM Low glycemic index (GI) foods are associated with improved prevention and control of metabolic and cardiovascular diseases (e.g. diabetes and myocardial infarction), even if the impact of their consumption within mixed meals is difficult to predict. Since the availability of wheat based products maintaining taste and texture of traditional ones, but with a low GI, is of relev...

Abstract: Based on a recent formulation of the V –parameter of a photonic crystal fiber we provide numerically based empirical expressions for this quantity only dependent on the two structural parameters — the air hole diameter and the hole-to-hole center spacing. Based on the unique relation between the V –parameter and the equivalent mode field radius we identify how the parameter space for ...

Since hollow-fiber flow field-flow fractionation (HF FIFFF) utilizes a cylindrical channel made of a hollow-fiber membrane, which is inexpensive and simple in channel assembly and thus disposable, interests are increasing as a potential separation device in cells, proteins, and macromolecules. In this study, performance of HF FIFFF of proteins is described by examining the influence of flow rat...

In this study, a technique has been proposed for developing constitutive models for polymer composite systems reinforced with single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNT) with various orientations with respect to the bulkmaterial coordinates. A nanotube, the local polymer adjacent to the nanotube, and the nanotube/polymer interface have been modeled as an equivalent-continuum fiber by using an equival...

A methodology was developed for the prediction of the electrical properties of carbon nanotube-polymer nanocomposites via Monte Carlo computational simulations. A two-dimensional microstructure that takes into account waviness, fiber length and diameter distributions is used as a representative volume element. Fiber interactions in the microstructure are identified and then modeled as an equiva...

In this paper, the saccharification process of okara fiber with pectinase, xylanase and cellulase was investigated as a preliminary attempt to effectively utilize okara fiber. The solubilization of okara fiber was raised in proportion to the number of enzymes used; that is, by a single enzyme, two enzymes and three enzymes, in that order. The saccharification of okara fiber was much more comple...
