Low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes can be constructed using constituent block codes other than single parity-check (SPC) codes. This paper considers random LDPC codes with constituent Hamming codes and investigates their asymptotic performance over the binary erasure channel. It is shown that there exist Hamming code-based LDPC codes which, when decoded with a low-complexity iterative algori...

In high-speed satellite-to-ground laser communications, it has been shown that the Markov-based erasure channel model is well suited for the downlink experiment results. In that model, since the average erasure rate is relatively high, a low-rate error correction code is needed. In this paper, we focus on the application of low rate systematic Luby transform (SLT) code and show that the perform...

In this paper we consider segment-based hard-decision packet-combining schemes. The schemes presented here are memory-efficient and easy to implement, and some of them appproach the performance of majority-voting schemes without having the same memory requirements. One particularly interesting scheme combines segment-based transmission with Luby-type erasure codes.

Reliable communication in Wireless Sensor Networks is hard to achieve efficiently using methods in conventional systems like Internet. End-to-end retransmission is inefficient, or in some cases impossible. Erasure code is code with which we can reconstruct m original messages by receiving any m out of n code words (n > m). Erasure code provides efficient option for achieving reliability. Erasur...

A message composed of packets is transmitted using erasure and channel coding over a fading channel with no feedback. For this scenario, the paper explores the trade-off between the redundancies allocated to the packet-level erasure code and the channel code, along with an objective of a low probability of failure to recover the message. To this end, we consider a fading model that we term prop...

It is known that any linear code allows for a decoding strategy that treats errors and erasures separately over an error-erasure channel. In particular, a carefully designed paritycheck matrix makes efficient erasure correction possible through iterative decoding while instantly providing the necessary paritycheck equations for independent error correction on demand. The separating redundancy o...

The ever-growing importance and volume of digital content generated by ICT services has led to the demand for highly durable and space-efficient content storage technology. Erasure code can be an effective solution to such requirements, but the current research outcomes do not efficiently handle simultaneous multiple disk failures. We propose Shingled Erasure Code (SHEC), an erasure code with l...

This paper describes an enhancement of content access Quality of Service in peer to peer (P2P) networks. The main idea is to use an erasure code to distribute the information over the peers. This distribution increases the users’ choice on disseminated encoded data and therefore statistically enhances the overall throughput of the transfer. A performance evaluation based on an original model us...

Achieving reliability in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) is challenging due to the limited resources available. In this study, we investigate the design of data survivability schemes using decentralized storage systems in WSNs. We propose a data storage system design based on Decentralized Erasure Codes (DEC) that features a simple and decentralized construction of the target code. The proposed...

Given a topology of local parity-check constraints, a maximally recoverable code (MRC) can correct all erasure patterns that are information-theoretically correctable. In a grid-like topology, there are a local constraints in every column forming a column code, b local constraints in every row forming a row code, and h global constraints in an (m × n) grid of codeword. Recently, Gopalan et al. ...
