We characterized the serological and pathogenic properties of two Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae isolates from human cases of infective endocarditis in Japan. One isolate was recovered from a fisherman, and was identified as serovar 3, which is known to be prevalent among fish isolates. This strain exhibited high virulence in mice but was avirulent in swine. Another was untypable, and avirulent i...

Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae is the causative agent of animal erysipelas and human erysipeloid. Previous studies suggested glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) plays a role in the pathogenesis of E. rhusiopathiae infection. We studied E. rhusiopathiae GAPDH interactions with pig vascular endothelial cells, fibronectin, and plasminogen. Recombinant GAPDH (rGAPDH) was successfully obt...

We describe the third case of prosthetic infection due to Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae. The patient, a 68-year-old woman, had had total knee arthroplasty 12 months before diagnosis. She had been in contact with swine at home. We review the seven previous reports of septic arthritis due to E. rhusiopathiae.

Received: Revised: Accepted: Published online: Oct 22, 2014 Dec 28, 2014 May 10, 2015 July 02, 2016 Infections with the Gram-positive bacterium Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae occur in many vertebrate species worldwide. This study describes an outbreak of erysipelas in a flock of geese, which was identified by post-mortem examination, PCR, and microbiological, biochemical, and histopathological ex...

The objective of this study was to confirm the presence and investigate the identity of Erysipelothrix spp. in condemned tissues obtained from a regional abattoir. Tissue specimens from 70 carcasses with macroscopic lesions suspect of swine erysipelas were collected at a regional abattoir in Iowa from October 2007 to February 2009. Erysipelothrix spp. culture isolation procedures were performed...

This report summarized the findings of a case of Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae infection in a farmed Norwegian Red heifer located in the south-east of Norway. The 2.5-year-old pregnant heifer was found dead after a short episode of inappetence. On gross exam, the heifer was severely dehydrated with uterine torsion. Microscopically, necrosis of the endometrium was present throughout the uterus al...

A 58-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with fever. The vegetation was confirmed by echocardiography on the tricuspid valve and Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae was isolated by blood culture. The patient died due to heart failure, and tricuspid valve vegetation was confirmed on autopsy and the sample of Gram's staining showed gram-positive microcolonies. Although about 60 cases of E. rhusiop...

Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae is a primary pathogen of swine and turkeys and sporadic cause of disease in a variety of other hosts, including humans. A genomic library of the highly virulent strain of E. rhusiopathiae E1-6P was constructed in the expression-cloning vector lambda gt11 and screened with serum from a pig convalescent from an E. rhusiopathiae experimental infection. Immunoreactive c...

We describe a case of acute vertebral osteomyelitis with associated prevertebral abscess due to Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae in an immunocompetent adult with recent known traumatic inoculation from the barb of a fish.
