Increasing resistance to third generation cephalosporins has become a cause for concern especially among Enterobacteriaceae that cause nosocomial infections. The prevalence of extended spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs) among members of Enterobacteriaceae constitutes a serious threat to current beta-lactam therapy leading to treatment failure and consequent escalation of costs. A detailed study w...

Infections with bacteria producing extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs) are increasing across Africa. This study reports on ESBL-producing Enterobacteriaceae as significant causes of infections and antibiotic resistance at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra, Ghana. Of 300 isolates examined, 49.3% produced ESBLs. The prevalence of ESBLs was significantly high among isolates from neonates (...

Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a gram-negative rod-shaped bacterium, is an opportunistic pathogen, which causes various serious diseases in humans and animals. The aims of this study were to evaluate of the presence of genomic island PAPI-1 in Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolated from Reference Laboratory of Ilam, Milad Hospital and Emam Khomeini Hospital, Iran and to study the frequency of extended spectr...

Extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs) are widespread in hospital settings worldwide. The present investigation was undertaken to assess the distribution and prevalence of ESBLs belonging to the TEM and SHV families in 448 ESBL-producing clinical isolates of Enterobacteriaceae collected from 10 different Italian hospitals. The natures of TEM and SHV determinants were identified by direct seq...

From June to October of 2002, a cluster of Escherichia coli isolates producing extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs) was detected in Stockholm. The isolates were grouped into two clones, one of which had already circulated in the same area before the outbreak. CTX-M-type ESBLs and coresistance to ciprofloxacin were identified in the strains.

Klebsiella pneumoniae is a major pathogen responsiple for nosocomial infections in world hospitals . One of the causes drug resistance production ESBls enzymes. This research documented TEM , SHV and CTX-M first time among Al-Anbar Iraqi. All studied clinical isolates K. (30) resistant- beta lactam from 100 were collected different clinicals sources such as (burned, wounds, sputum, and urine samp...

OBJECTIVES To investigate the occurrence and the diversity of Ambler class A ESBLs among Enterobacteriaceae from different Portuguese clinical settings over a 2 year period (2002-04). METHODS One hundred and nine extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Enterobacteriaceae isolates from five geographically distant health institutions in Portugal were studied. ESBLs were characterized ...

BACKGROUND extended spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) producing gram negative bacilli are becoming a growing problem worldwide with difficulties in designing a national formulary for empirical treatment of gram negative sepsis. OBJECTIVES In this study, we investigated the in vitro activity of Carbapenems, Pipracillin-Tazobactam, Ciprofloxacin alone or in combination with aminoglycosides against ES...

A total of 907 consecutive isolates of members of the family Enterobacteriaceae recovered during a 20-week period were tested for production of extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs) by the double-disk (DD) potentiation method. Of 84 DD-positive isolates, 83 (9.2%) produced ESBLs based on isoelectric focusing. SHV-derived ESBLs and several TEM-derived ESBLs were present in nine species, incl...
