This study explores the contribution of Speech and Language Therapists (SLTs) to the assessment and management of patients presenting on videofluoroscopic swallow studies (VFSS) with a suspected pharyngo-oesophageal diverticulum. Records for all patients who attended for VFSS in an acute hospital over an eleven-year period were examined (N = 1820). Twenty patients were identified on VFSS as hav...
Zenker’s diverticulum is a pouch protruding posteriorly above the upper esophageal sphincter (1). A small diverticulum may be asymptomatic, while a large one may produce dysphagia, food regurgitation, weight loss, and gastroesophageal reflux symptoms. Pneumonia has been reported as a complication in 12% of cases (2). I present the case of an elderly man whose recurrent complications of a Zenker...
In this report, we seek to shed light on a 44-year-old Caucasian male with a known history of an esophageal diverticulum, who was transferred to our facility after an upper endoscopy at an outside hospital suggested a purulent discharge emanating from the mouth of a mid-esophageal diverticulum. A barium swallow done at the outside institution had reportedly demonstrated an 8 cm long barium coll...
Mid-esophageal diverticula are rare entities. Only symptomatic patients usually receive surgical treatment. Esophageal leakage is one of the most common complications after these procedures. Though in literature, operative management is the preferred treatment for esophageal fistula, conservative approach is described in case of small leaks. We report a case of an operated giant mid-esophageal ...
Epiphrenic diverticulum is rare, comprising of about 10% of all esophageal diverticula. Carcinoma arising within such a diverticulum is even less common. We report on two patients with squamous cell carcinoma arising from an epiphrenic diverticulum. Some features of malignant change related to the epiphrenic diverticula were misdiagnosed or missed in our cases and other reports due to lack of c...
We report a two year old child who developed a large esophageal diverticulum over a period of ten months following ingestion of a multispiked leaf of Quercus semicarpipholia. Though the endoscopic removal of foreign body was successful, it did not relieve the symptoms and patient required surgical resection of the diverticulum. Patient is asymptomatic after 4 months of follow up.
A Zenker’s diverticulum is the rarest type of gastrointestinal diverticulum and is located immediately above the upper esophageal sphincter. Here we report the case of a dislodged tooth that entered and remained hidden in a Zenker’s diverticulum, and combined use of endoscopy and X-ray fluoroscopy was useful for diagnosis and treatment. To our knowledge, this is the first report of a dislodged ...
Killian-Jamieson (K-J) diverticulum is a rare cervical oesophageal diverticulum, less commonly encountered compared with Zenker's diverticulum (ZD). We report a case of K-J diverticulum in a 52-year-old lady who presented with sensation of lump in the neck and food stuck in the throat of 5 years duration. Esophagogram showed a large rightsided pharyngoesophageal diverticulum which was confirmed...
Esophageal diverticula are uncommon lesions that are usually classified according to their location (cervical, thoracic, or epiphrenic), or underlying pathogenesis (pulsion or traction), and their morphology (true or false). The majority of esophageal diverticula are acquired lesions that occur predominantly in elderly adults. Pulsion, or false, diverticula are the most commonly encountered type...
