A case of carotid-cavernous fistula is described associated with extradural haematoma, temporal lobe contusion, ophthalmoplegia, optic nerve injury by fracture, rhinorrhoea, orbital encephalocoele, and traumatic carotid thrombosis. The fistula was occluded by clipping of the carotid artery intracranially and also of the ophthalmic artery.

Carotid artery is the most important artery that carries the major part of the blood supply to the head and neck. The branching of the common carotid artery usually occurs at the upper edge of the thyroid cartilage. The placement of carotid sinus has also increased its importance in this area. A 2-year-old child fell on a toothbrush, sustaining a pharyngeal injury. Eighteen hours later, localizing symptoms of a cerebrovascular accident became evident. Pharyngeal injuries may be complicated by internal carotid arte...

The hypothesis that saphenous vein patch angioplasty protects against early postoperative restenosis and thrombosis-occlusion was tested by comparing the clinical outcome and carotid artery status of 100 carotid endarterectomies with and 100 without saphenous vein patch angioplasty performed by a single surgeon over a 30-month period. The patient population, selection, perioperative management,...

We retrospectively studied 46 patients with symptomatic retinal artery occlusion and assessed the pattern and extent of carotid artery disease ipsilateral to the retinal artery occlusion. Ipsilateral internal carotid artery atherosclerotic lesions were virtually limited to the cervical arterial segment; 50% of such lesions were plaques or stenoses of less than or equal to 60%, whereas 15% of th...

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE We have tested the hypothesis that platelet-derived serotonin is released into the bloodstream during cerebrovascular thrombosis. METHODS Nonocclusive common carotid artery thrombosis was produced photochemically in 22 anesthetized adult male Wistar rats using the photosensitizing dye rose bengal and irradiation with an argon-pumped dye laser. Plasma serotonin levels we...

Introduction: Doppler ultrasonography (DUS) is the most preferable method for screening of carotid artery disease in patients undergoing CABG. The purpose of this study was to investigate the frequency of carotid artery disease and determine the relation between known risk factors of atherosclerosis and rate of carotid artery narrowing in order to identify high-risk groups among patients schedu...

A 58-year-old male, known to have hepatitis C virus (HCV), presented with intermittent headaches and left-sided sensorimotor symptoms. There were no focal neurological deficits on examination. Electrocardiogram was unremarkable. Computed tomography angiography head and neck displayed extracranial right internal carotid artery occlusion. Magnetic resonance imaging showed right cortical vein thro...
