We report that eucaryotic cells were induced to synthesize a specific class of heat shock proteins (hsps) when they entered the resting state, G0. This finding was originally made with Saccharomyces cerevisiae cells by taking advantage of the system in which we can distinguish between G1 arrests leading to G0 and those that do not result in G0 (Iida, H., and I. Yahara, 1984, J. Cell Biol. 98:11...

Most fungal toxins interact specifically with well-defined target structures, thereby reaching very high selectivity for the cell type attacked (17). The susceptibility of bacteria to beta-lactam antibiotics, as an example, is due to a number of penicillin-binding proteins on the bacterial plasma membrane. The eucaryotic cell lacks such target structures. Its insusceptibility to beta-lactams se...

Introduction Leukemia inhibitory factor (LIF) is a polyfunctional cytokine with numerous regulatory effects in vivo and in vitro. In murine stem cell cultures it is the essential media supplement for the maintenance of pluripotency of embryonic and induced pluripotent stem cells. To explore if the glycosylation and/or other post-translational modifications are affecting this activity, we produc...

The use of antibiotics has immensely helped the medical profession in controling and treatli'ent of infectious disease since J.940 However, there has been problems and disappointments along the wayi.e.wide-spread rise of resistant bacteria from previously sensitive ones & antibiotic antagonism. Many factors have helped to precipitate these problems, which the preventable, missuse of antibiotics b...

SigD is translocated into eucaryotic cells by a type III secretion system. In this work, evidence that the putative chaperone SigE directly interacts with SigD is presented. A bacterial two-hybrid system demonstrated that SigE can interact with itself and SigD. In addition, SigD was specifically copurified with SigE-His(6) on a nickel column.

There have been described a wide variety of methods for the preparation of total RNA from eucaryotic cells (1, 2). These methods are mainly designed for the isolation of RNA from relatively large amounts of cells. In a situation of screening a large number of cell clones, minimized cell cultivation effort and preparation time for total RNA isolation will be of great advantage. We developed a me...

The binding of pertussis toxin and its subunits to cell surface receptors and purified glycoproteins was examined. The interaction of pertussis toxin with components of two variant Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cell lines was studied. These cell lines are deficient in either sialic acid residues (LEC 2) or sialic acid and galactose residues (LEC 8) on cell surface macromolecules. The binding of p...

Two distinct protein carboxyl methyltransferases (PCM) were identified in the electric organ of Torpedo ocellata. They were separated from each other in the active form by means of nondenaturing gel electrophoresis and by p-(chloromercuri)benzoate-agarose chromatography, and were individually identified by specific polyclonal antibodies. The existence of at least two distinct PCMs in eucaryotic...

Eucaryotic cells contain two complete genetic systems, one based on nuclear DNA and the other on cytoplasmic DNA . The study of these systems has been greatly facilitated by the existence of specific inhibitors . One such inhibitor is the trypanocidal drug, ethidium bromide (Short, Peak, and Watkins, 1953) . Application of the drug to trypanosomes in vitro causes alterations in the structure of...
