The intake of a pelleted diet offered ad libitum to pregnant Merino ewes between the 90th and 140th days of pregnancy was influenced by their previous nutritional history and degree of body fatness. Marked compensatory intake occurred in previously ill-fed ewes whereas the intake of well-fed fat ewes carrying single foetuses declined slightly as pregnancy proceeded. The body weights of single f...

OBJECTIVES To evaluate the efficacy of flecainide and digoxin combination in foetal supraventricular tachycardia. SETTING This study was carried out in a tertiary referral centre. METHODS We conducted a retrospective review of 29 patients diagnosed with supraventricular foetal tachycardia between 2001 and 2009. Mode of presentation, foetal cardiac function, maternal anti-arrhythmic serum le...

From early childhood, Turner syndrome patients have a flattened cranial base, maxillary retrognathism, and short hands. There are, however, no studies that show when these genotype-determined abnormalities occur prenatally. The purpose of the present study was to measure craniofacial profile and hand radiographs of second trimester foetuses with Turner syndrome and compare the results with simi...

Isopropylantipyrine (IPA, propyphenazone) is a pyrazolone derivative, widely used as an antipyretic and analgesic drug. The aim of the study was to evaluate the influence of propyphenazone on rat development. IPA was administered to pregnant rats from day 8 to day 14 of pregnancy once a day, orally by a stomach tube at doses of 2.10 (R1), 21.0 (R2), and 210.0 mg/kg/day (R3). The dams were sacri...

The vascular content of retrodiscal tissue in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) plays a critical role in joint function, and its morphology is therefore likely relatedto TMJ pain. Using histological sections of human foetuses as well as T2-weighted magnetic resonance images (MRI), we measured the vascular content of retrodiscal tissue. MRI showing no pathology in and around the TMJ were obtaine...

The effects of l-arginine on porcine foetal development and myogenesis were determined. Twenty Swiss Large White gilts were randomly allocated to either the control (C) or l-arginine treatment (A). In addition to the standard gestation diet, A-sows received 26 g l-arginine daily from days 14 to 28 of gestation. At day 75 of pregnancy, sows were sacrificed and the number and weight of foetuses w...

Fusion of the neural arches was studied in 6 serially sectioned human foetuses aged 9 and 10 weeks. In foetuses of 9 weeks, the completion of arches was observed in the cervical, upper thoracic, and middle thoracic regions of the vertebral column. During the 10th week of development, fusion of neural processes progresses in the lower thoracic and upper three lumbar vertebrae.

Development of the foetal autonomic nervous system can be indirectly understood by looking at the changes in beat to beat variability in foetal heart rates. This study presents Tone-Entropy (T-E) analysis of foetal heart rate variability (HRV) at multiple lags (1–8) to understand the influence of gestational ages (early and late) on the development of the foetal autonomic nervous system (ANS). ...

The ability of the specific immune response of organisms is determined by the possibility of synthesis, transport and presentation of the major histocompatibility complex class II (MHC II) molecules on the surface of antigen-presenting cells. MHC II molecules are responsible for the binding, transport and presentation of a foreign antigen to helper T lymphocytes. They also stimulate the multipl...
