Background : Gastrografin is a hyperosmolar water-soluble contrast medium. Besides its predictive value for the need of operative treatment, a potential therapeutic role of this agent in adhesive small bowel obstruction has been suggested. Aim: To evaluate the role of Gastrografin in predicting the need of surgery in post operative intestinal obstruction and its therapeutic effect in management...
We report a case of a 59-year-old woman who was diagnosed with gastric and small intestinal anisakiasis, which was successfully treated with endoscopic extraction and Gastrografin therapy. She was admitted to our hospital with epigastric pain and vomiting one day after eating raw fish. She exhibited tenderness in the epigastrium without obvious rebound tenderness or guarding. Computed tomograph...
The patient was a 55-year-old male alcoholic who presented with bleeding oesophageal varices. During the course of management a SengstakenBlakemore tube was passed and inflated with a Gastrografin and saline solution.1 2 The position of the tube was checked radiologically. Despite sedation the patient was restless and succeeded in pulling the tube so that the oesophageal balloon was partly out ...
Abstract Background Adhesive small bowel obstruction (aSBO) is a common surgical emergency causing high morbidity and even some mortality. The adhesions such obstructions (SBO) are typically the footprints of previous abdominal surgeries. National Audit Small Obstruction (NASBO) recommended that in patients not needing surgery for aSBO, gastrografin should be embedded clinical management. An au...
Seventeen cases of neonatal intestinal obstruction due to inspissated milk curds were seen at this hospital in the 9 years 1964-1972. The obstruction started on the 2nd to 10th day of life. Half the babies passed blood from the rectum and in most the x-rays were diagnostic. All survived, 14 after operation and 3 after medical treatment with a Gastrografin enema. Incomplete absorption of solids,...
Twenty-five (37%) patients with cystic fibrosis attending our clinic have experienced acute meconium ileus equivalent. In one year 37 of 40 episodes were treated with single dose oral Gastrografin with an 81% success rate, 75% being treated as outpatients. Patients found this treatment preferable to other recommended treatment.
INTRODUCTION Existing trials studying the use of Gastrografin for management of adhesive small bowel obstruction (SBO) are limited by methodological flaws and small sample sizes. We compared institutional protocols with and without Gastrografin (GG), hypothesizing that a SBO management protocol utilizing GG is associated with lesser rates of exploration, shorter length of stay, and fewer compli...
A patient developed sepsis syndrome with shock 7 h after an anaesthetic for a shoulder replacement. Tracheal intubation had been difficult and required the use of a stylet and gum-elastic bougies. A gastrografin swallow subsequently demonstrated an oesophageal perforation and mediastinitis was diagnosed at surgical exploration. She survived after a prolonged period of intensive care treatment.
