Visceral obesity is associated with resistance to the antilipolytic effect of insulin in vivo. We investigated whether subcutaneous abdominal and gluteal adipocytes from viscerally obese women exhibit insulin resistance in vitro. Subjects were obese black and white premenopausal nondiabetic women matched for visceral adipose tissue (VAT), total adiposity, and age. Independently of race and adip...
Blunt traumatic injuries to the superior gluteal artery are rare in clinic. A majority of injuries present as aneurysms following penetrating trauma, fracture pelvis or posterior dislocation of the hip joint. We reported a rare case of superior gluteal artery pseudoaneurysm following blunt trauma presenting as large expanding right gluteal hematoma without any bony injury. The gluteal hematoma ...
Primary tuberculous gluteal abscess without bone involvement has not been reported in infancy. We report 3 infants with isolated tuberculous gluteal abscess who presented with gluteal swelling of 2 weeks, 1 month and 6 months duration, respectively. Tuberculin test was positive in all cases. Pus cultures from the gluteal abscess grew Mycobacterium tuberculosis in all 3 infants.
OBJECTIVE There is growing evidence to support the association of gluteal muscle strength deficits in individuals with patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS) and the effectiveness of gluteal strengthening when treating PFPS. In additiona, an impressive body of work evaluating gluteal electromyography (EMG) has recently emerged, further supporting the importance of gluteal muscle function in PFPS. ...
The hip joint gains its vascular supply from the superior gluteal arteries as well as from the medial and lateral circumflex femoral arteries with the first perforating artery. In gluteal trauma, the superior and inferior gluteal artery may be affected which may end with vascular insult of hip joint. The current study includes a dissection of 171 cadavers to examine the vascular supply of hip j...
Introduction The superior gluteal neurovascular bundle passes between the piriformis muscle and gluteus medius muscle as it moves distally to supply the muscles of the gluteal region. The superior gluteal nerve receives spinal contributions from L4, L5, and S1 while the superior gluteal artery is the terminal branch of the posterior division of the internal iliac artery [1]. Multiple variations...
BACKGROUND Erysipelas of the thigh and the gluteal region are rarely described and not well characterized. Therefore we aim to describe the prevalence, clinical characteristics, and risk factors of these erysipelas types. METHODS The files of 1,423 patients with erysipelas were analyzed. Data from patients with erysipelas of the thigh or the gluteal region were compared between the two groups...
A rare complication of diverticular disease is the formation of fistulas, most commonly either colo-vesical or colo-vaginal. We present the unusual case of a perforated sigmoid diverticulum forming a colo-gluteal fistula and presenting initially as a gluteal abscess in an otherwise asymptomatic patient. After drainage of the gluteal abscess, the patient re-presented with faecal loss from the ab...
