A nanoporous gold film (NPGF) was prepared onto a gold electrode surface using a facile and green electrochemical approach via anodization at 2.0 V in 0.5 mol L(-1) H2SO4. The as-synthesized NPGF electrode showed superior electrocatalytic activity towards dissolved oxygen reduction at a low overpotential (-0.045 V) along with 2-fold enhanced sensitivity.

New and unknown electrocatalytic oxidation of water was found to occur on a nano-gold attached palladium electrode. Since the oxidation potential was negative enough to that of well-known normal oxidation of water to form O2, the direct use of water as a fuel, instead of alcohols, might be possible using the nano-gold/palladium electrode.

The redox properties of a monolayer of alkanethiolate-protected gold nanoclusters (MPCs) constructed on a gold slide electrode was studied in 1,2-dichloroethane (DCE) electrolyte solutions. The influence of the electrostatic interaction between attached MPCs and the substrate electrode on the absolute standard redox potential of MPCs was theoretically considered and studied experimentally.
