Isolates of widely distributed amoeba species Hartmannella vermiformis differs in the details of cyst structure. This is unusual for gymnamoebae and is important in course of modern approaches to amoebae systematic. Cysts of the isolate of this species, described here, have regular separation of the cyst wall into endocyst and ectocyst, in contrast with the “original” isolates, described by F.C...
background: poor hygiene will provide good condition for corneal infections by opportunistic free-living amoebae (fla) in soft contact lens wearers. in the present study an amoebic keratitis due to hartmannella has been recognized in a 22-year-old girl with a history of improper soft contact lens use. she had unilateral keratitis on her left eye. her clinical signs were eye pain, redness, blurr...
Based on morphological and molecular characterisation, four amoeba strains isolated from organs of freshwater fish were identified as Hartmannella vermiformis Page, 1967. Small subunit rRNA gene sequences of these strains expand the set of corresponding complete and almost complete sequences of this species to twelve. A new species-specific oligonucleotide probe inferred from recently available...
Eighteen cases of Acanthamoeba-associated keratitis among contact lens wearers seen at the Department of Ophthalmology, Karl-Franzens-University, Graz, Austria, between 1996 and 1999 are reviewed. The amoebae were proven to be the causative agents in three patients. The aim of our study was to discriminate between clinically relevant and nonrelevant isolates and to assess the relatedness of the...
The incidence of lung and other diseases due to nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) is increasing. NTM sources include potable water, especially in households where NTM populate pipes, taps, and showerheads. NTM share habitats with free-living amoebae (FLA) and can grow in FLA as parasites or as endosymbionts. FLA containing NTM may form cysts that protect mycobacteria from disinfectants and anti...
In this study, two halophilic bacterial strains isolated from saline habitats in Argentina grew in the presence of gas oil. They were identified as Halomonas spp. and Nesterenkonia sp. by 16S ribosomal RNA sequencing. Chemotaxis towards gas oil was observed in Halomonas spp. by using swimming assays.
