To determine human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8) K1 genotypes in patients with Kaposi sarcoma (KS) from Peru, we characterized HHV-8 in 25 KS biopsy samples. Our findings of 8 A, 1 B, 14 C, and 2 E subtypes showed high HHV-8 diversity in these patients and association between E genotype and KS development.

To summarize the seroprevalence of human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8) in mainland China, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis based on available literature. Data show that differences in HHV-8 prevalence vary considerably among different ethnic groups and geographic regions. Blood-borne transmission could be a potential route for HHV-8 infection in China.

Human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8) open reading frame K1 sequences amplified from the urine of 5 of 78 (6.4%) infected people in Malawi were monotypic. In two people, urinary and oral sequences were genotypically different. Comprehensive evaluation of HHV-8 transmission may require characterization of HHV-8 shed both in urine and orally.

We studied residents of remote villages and the capital (Port Moresby) of Papua New Guinea to determine the distribution of human herpesvirus-8 (HHV-8) infection. Our data suggest that HHV-8 has been endemic on the island for a long time and that the epidemiologic pattern of HHV-8 is more similar to that of herpes simplex virus-2 than hepatitis C virus.

Pyogenic granuloma-like Kaposi sarcoma (PG-like KS) is a clinicopathologic variant of (KS), vascular tumor caused by human herpesvirus-8 (HHV-8). PG-like KS challenging entity to diagnose because its clinical and histological features encompass both pyogenic granuloma (PG) Distinction between the two entities clinically important as management different. patients requires evaluation their immun...

An analysis of all known human herpesviruses has not previously been reported on sperm from normal donors. Using an array-based detection method, we determined the cross-sectional frequency of human herpesviruses in semen from 198 Danish sperm donors. Fifty-five of the donors had at least one ejaculate that was positive for one or more human herpesvirus. Of these 27.3% (n = 15) had a double her...

High prevalence of human herpesvirus type 8 (HHV-8) infection has been reported on the island of Sardinia. Among emigrants from Sardinia, rates of HHV-8 infection are lower than they are in Sardinia and are similar to those observed in the local population. Thus, environmental factors seem to play a relevant role in affecting the prevalence of HHV-8 infection.

The presence of human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8) was determined by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in nasal secretions and saliva from 14 HHV-8-seropositive persons, including 8 Kaposi's sarcoma patients: 7 were human immunodeficiency virus type 1-infected, 6 of whom were asymptomatic. HHV-8 was detected in one or both body fluids in 8 (57%) of 14 subjects. Parallel PCR testing revealed the concomit...

Human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8), a gammaherpesvirus implicated in Kaposi's sarcoma, primary effusion lymphoma, and Castleman's disease, encodes several pathogenically important cellular homologs. To define the HHV-8 transcription program, RNA obtained from latently infected body cavity-based lymphoma 1 cells induced to undergo lytic replication was used to query a custom HHV-8 DNA microarray contai...

Human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8)/Kaposi sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) is linked to a number of malignancies thought to be driven by cytokines, including interleukin-6 (IL-6). Rta, a transcriptional activator encoded by HHV-8/KSHV, activates the viral lytic cycle leading to the expression of several viral genes implicated in viral pathogenesis. However, the effect of HHV-8/KSHV Rta on cellula...
