Hypercalcemia in patients with cancer is a common laboratory finding affecting up to 44% of that patient population. 1,25-Dihydroxyvitamin D3 mediated hypercalcemia is one of the rare mechanisms of this endocrine emergency in cancer patients. It is even rarer for solid organ neoplasms to present with hypercalcemia mediated through the production of 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3. We report a case of ...
Two cases of hypercalcemia associated with transitional cell carcinoma and negative bone scan are described. In both cases hypercalcemia appeared while there was evidence of tumor spread. Although hypercalcemia was controlled, both patients died shortly thereafter. Hypercalcemia rarely occurs in transitional cell carcinoma and its appearance may suggest spreading of the tumor and poor prognosis.
Fluconazole, voriconazole, and itraconazole may potentiate the hypercalcemic effect of other medications, although to date, triazoles alone have not been linked to hypercalcemia. We describe a case of new-onset hypercalcemia in the setting of high-dose fluconazole that resolved after changing the antifungal regimen. We reviewed our institutional database to assess the frequency of moderate or s...
homeostatsis and the pathophysiology of disorders associated with abnormal CaSR activity including familial hypocalciruic hypercalcemia, neonatal severe hyperparathyroidism, and secondary hyperparathyroidism. The CaSR, a member of superfamily of G-protein-coupled receptors, has a large extracelluar domain and seven membrane-spanning segments (1). This receptor is localized on the surface of var...
Adrenal insufficiency is an uncommon cause of hypercalcemia and not easily considered as an etiology of adrenal insufficiency in clinical practice, as not all cases of adrenal insufficiency manifest as hypercalcemia. We report a case of secondary adrenal insufficiency presenting as hypercalcemia and acute kidney injury in a 66-year-old female. The patient was admitted to the emergency departmen...
PURPOSE OF REVIEW In this review, we define hypercalcemia levels, common causes for hypercalcemia in children, and treatment in order to aid the practicing pediatrician. RECENT FINDINGS One rare cause of hypercalcemia in the child is familial hypocalciuric hypercalcemia (also termed familial benign hypercalcemia). Mutations that inactivate the Ca-sensing receptor gene FHH have been described ...
A 60-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with marked hypercalcemia. He had no symptoms that might be caused by hypercalcemia. Plasma concentrations of calcium and intact parathyroid hormone were 15.2 mg/dl and 103 pg/ml, respectively. Radiological examinations revealed no abnormal findings. His calcium-creatinine clearance ratio was calculated to be 0.004, thus he was diagnosed as having ...
BACKGROUND Rhabdomyolysis is frequently complicated by multiple electrolyte abnormalities, including hyperkalemia, hyperphosphatemia, and hypo/hypercalcemia. Hypercalcemia can be severe and life-threatening. CASE REPORT A 23-year-old white male suffered severe trauma to his lower extremities after a motor vehicle accident, leading to severe muscle damage, cardiac arrhythmia, cardiac arrest, a...
OBJECTIVE To present a case of hypercalcemia associated with thyrotoxicosis in a patient with vitamin D deficiency and review biochemical changes during the course of treatment. METHODS We report a case, describe the changes in serum calcium, phosphorus, parathyroid hormone in Graves' disease and concomitant Vitamin D deficiency. We compare our findings to those reported in literature. RESU...
Abstract Ectopic calcifications have been observed in patients with hypophosphatasia (HPP)—a rare, inherited, metabolic disorder characterized by reduced enzymatic activity of tissue nonspecific alkaline phosphatase. The natural history these is poorly understood. Using data from the Global HPP Registry, a cross-sectional, observational analysis was conducted to better understand prevalence nep...
