Observation: The anticonvulsant hypersensitivity syndrome is rare complication that occurs with the use of antiepileptic medications. All of the aromatic anticonvulsant drugs are metabolised by the cytochrome P-450 enzyme to a common arene oxide metabolite that is normally detoxified by epoxide hydrolase. A genetically determined inability to detoxify the toxic metabolites due to a defect in th...
Background: Drug-induced hypersensitivity syndrome (DIHS) can be associated with cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection, besides induced by drugs. We report a case of DIHS prolonged atypical clinical features and vasculitis precipitated drug allergy, CMV, other viral infections.
The present case provides direct evidence of human herpesvirus 6 reactivation in resected lymph node tissue in a patient with drug-induced hypersensitivity syndrome. This case clearly demonstrates that appropriate pathological evaluation of lymphadenopathy for drug-induced hypersensitivity syndrome, which mimics malignant lymphoma in clinical, radiological, and pathological findings, is required.
Dapsone, a potent antiparasitic and anti-inflammatory compound, is mainly used in the treatment of leprosy and a variety of blistering skin diseases. It may cause a severe adverse drug reaction with multiorgan involvement known as dapsone hypersensitivity syndrome. We report the case of a 21-year-old female patient with dapsone hypersensitivity syndrome. The clinical presentation mimicked a vir...
INTRODUCTION Allopurinol is a widely-prescribed urate-lowering agent. Allopurinol hypersensitivity syndrome, a severe form of cutaneous adverse reaction, is associated with significant mortality and morbidity. The aim of this study was to document the clinical presentation of allopurinol hypersensitivity in a local population, examine the indications for urate-lowering therapy and to identify p...
Chronic cough has been suggested to be due to three conditions, asthma, post nasal drip, and reflux disease. A different paradigm has evolved in which cough is viewed as the primary condition characterised by afferent neuronal hypersensitivity and different aspects of this syndrome are manifest in the different phenotypes of cough. There are several advantages to viewing cough hypersensitivity ...
