PURPOSE OF REVIEW Encephalitis and postinfectious encephalitis represent two important conditions for the neurologist, both in terms of their presentations as neurologic emergencies and their potential to cause death or serious neurologic impairment. Japanese encephalitis virus was detected by deep sequencing for the first time in urine of a 16-year-old boy with encephalitis. Seroconversion and polymerase chain reaction analysis confirmed the metagenomics finding. Urine is useful for diagnosis of flaviviral encephalitis, whereas deep sequencing can be a panpathogen assay for the diagnosis of life-threatening infectious diseases.

INTRODUCTION Many encephalitis survivors can benefit from rehabilitation. However, there is currently no comprehensive review describing rehabilitation intervention outcomes among children and adults with infectious encephalitis. This is a protocol for a systematic review that will summarise the current literature on outcomes following rehabilitative interventions among children and adults with...

Introduction The broad definition of the term “encephalitis,” that is, inflammation of the brain, necessitates acknowledgment of the enormous inclusivity of the topic. The most common interpretation of the term implies a direct invasion of the brain by an infectious pathogen, most commonly, viral, fungal, or parasitic. The topic also includes examples of meningitis mediated by bacteria or other...

BACKGROUND Encephalitis has many causes, but for most patients the cause is unknown. We aimed to establish the cause and identify the clinical differences between causes in patients with encephalitis in England. METHODS Patients of all ages and with symptoms suggestive of encephalitis were actively recruited for 2 years (staged start between October, 2005, and November, 2006) from 24 hospital...

We present a 7 yr old boy afflicted with super-refractory seizure that responded poorly to antiepileptic drugs and sustained a long course of hospitalization and complications of high doses of medications as well as longstanding stay in hospital. The differential diagnoses were, fever-induced refractory epileptic encephalopathy (FIRES), and infectious and autoimmune encephalitis. However, work-...

BACKGROUND We describe the spectrum of etiologies associated with temporal lobe (TL) encephalitis and identify clinical and radiologic features that distinguish herpes simplex encephalitis (HSE) from its mimics. METHODS We reviewed all adult cases of encephalitis with TL abnormalities on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) from the California Encephalitis Project. We evaluated the association be...

PURPOSE OF REVIEW This review describes the main types of autoimmune encephalitis with special emphasis on those associated with antibodies against neuronal cell surface or synaptic proteins, and the differential diagnosis with infectious encephalitis. RECENT FINDINGS There is a continuous expansion of the number of cell surface or synaptic proteins that are targets of autoimmunity. The most ...
