In this study are presented clinical approaches in lambs with experimentally induced haemonchosis. Eighteen lambs aged about 3 months were included in the investigation. The animals were divided into 3 groups and were inoculated by Haemonchus contortus infective larvae (L3) in following order: G1 6000 L3; G2 4000 L3 and G3 served as a noninfected control group. Clinical signs were observed week...

Parasitic hookworms and the free-living model nematode Caenorhabtidis elegans share a developmental arrested stage, called the dauer stage in C. elegans and the infective third-stage larva (L3) in hookworms. One of the key transcription factors that regulate entrance to and exit from developmental arrest is the forkhead transcription factor DAF-16/FoxO. During the dauer stage, DAF-16 is activat...

The possibility of concomitant immunity and its potential mechanisms in Onchocerca volvulus infection were examined by analyzing cytokine and antibody responses to infective larval (third-stage larvae [L3] and molting L3 [mL3]), adult female worm (F-OvAg), and skin microfilaria (Smf) antigens in infected individuals in a region of hyperendemicity in Cameroon as a function of age. Peripheral blo...

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES Periodic monitoring of vector population for infection and infectivity rates is central to the evaluation of the filariasis elimination strategies in endemic areas to monitor the success of MDA and also to establish endpoints for intervention. The main objective of this study was to develop a RT-PCR assay, based on L3 stage-specific primers to detect the presence of infe...

Infective endocarditis is a life-threatening condition caused by microbial infection of the heart's endocardial surface. This condition can also be associated with bacterial infections of other organs. We experienced an unusual case of recurrent infective endocarditis associated with pyogenic spondylodiskitis. A 70-year-old man presented with persistent fever and lower back pain visited our hos...

Exsheathed infective larvae (L3) of 16 species of nematodes were tested for infectivity in either sheep or cattle after they had been frozen and stored in 0,09% NaCl solution in the gas phase of liquid nitrogen for periods of up to 59 months. A mean of greater than 90% of the L3 of Haemonchus contortus, Ostertagia circumcincta, Trichostrongylus axei, Trichostrongylus colubriformis, Nematodirus ...

To assess the physiologic interactions between the infective stage of Brugia malayi--one of the extracellular parasites responsible for lymphatic filariasis in humans--and the APC with which they come in contact during their development and routes of travel, we have investigated the interaction between the infective stage (L3) of B. malayi and human Langerhans cells (LC) in the skin. Our data i...

The nematode Steinernema carpocapsae (All) strain was significantly more effective against peachtree borer larvae (Synanthedon exitiosa [Lepidoptera: Sesiidae]) than Steinernema riobrave (7-12) strain in field and laboratory experiments. Eighty-eight percent control of peachtree borer larvae was obtained with S. carpocapsae in the field trial when applied at 3 x 10(5) infective juveniles per tr...

Data on the morphology of the egg, mature larva (L3) and pupa of Squamapion elongatum (Germar, 1817) are presented. The development cycle of this species lasts 51-54 days: a 12-day egg period, a 30-day larval period, and a 12-day pupal period, on average. The larvae are attacked by parasitic hymenopterans of the superfamily Chalcidoidea.

Our knowledge and control of the pathogenesis induced by the filariae remain limited due to experimental obstacles presented by parasitic nematode biology and the lack of selective prophylactic or curative drugs. Here we thought to investigate the role of neutrophils in the host innate immune response to the infection caused by the Litomosoides sigmodontis murine model of human filariasis using...
