The purpose of this study was to investigate the anatomical basis of intercostal nerve transfer to the suprascapular nerve and provide a case report. Thoracic walls of 30 embalmed human cadavers were used to investigate the anatomical feasibility for neurotization of the suprascapular nerve with intercostal nerves in brachial plexus root avulsions. We found that the 3rd and 4th intercostal nerv...
In obstetric brachial plexus lesions with avulsion injury, nerve grafting for biceps muscle re-innervation may not be possible owing to the unavailability of a proximal stump. In such cases, the intercostal nerves or medial pectoral nerve can serve as donor nerves in an end-to-end transfer to the musculocutaneous nerve. The present study reports the results of both techniques from a single inst...
The internal thoracic (mammary) nerve is formed by contributions from the subclavian plexus and the phrenic nerve. It descends along the internal thoracic artery to the level of the seventh costal cartilage where it is lost. Some of its branches communicate with the intercostal nerves -and are thought to be distributed with these nerves. Others follow perforating and anterior mediastinal arteries.
Clinical and research workers are occasionally confronted by problems concerning cardiac innervation that may not be answered by the scanty details given in textbooks, and special articles usually deal with only one facet of the subject. A resume of available information may therefore prove helpful. The heart is innervated by both sympathetic and parasympathetic nerves, and afferents from the p...
To identify cell surface molecules that define position in the mammalian nervous system, we previously characterized the binding of two monoclonal antibodies, ROCA1 and ROCA2, to adult rat sympathetic ganglia and intercostal nerves. The binding of ROCA1 is highest in rostral ganglia and nerves and declines in a graded manner in the caudal segments. ROCA2 labels the same cells in ganglia and ner...
Regional anesthesia for non-obstetric surgery in parturients is a method to decrease patient and fetal risk during general anesthesia. Thoracic interfascial nerve block can be used as an analgesic technique for surgical procedures of the thorax. The Pecs II block is an interfascial block that targets not only the medial and lateral pectoral nerves, but also the lateral cutaneous branch of the i...
Interfascial plane block of anterior and lateral cutaneous branches of intercostal nerves, known as pecto-intercostal fascial plane block (PIFB) and serratus--intercostal plane block (SIFB), is an anesthetic procedure for ribcage anesthesia not previously reported in the setting of critical care. A similar anesthetic technique has proven adequate pain control during and after abdominal and brea...
Cooper in 1840 described mammary branches from the 2nd-6th intercostal nerves, and noticed that the nipple was supplied by branches which lay close to the surface of the gland. Eckhard (1850) divided the mammary branches into superficial branches to the skin and nipple, and deep branches to the glandular tissue and nipple, but many later authors ignored those findings. After the second World Wa...
Internal intercostal and abdominal motoneurons are strongly coactivated during expiration. We investigated whether that synergy was paralleled by synergistic Group I reflex excitation. Intracellular recordings were made from motoneurons of the internal intercostal nerve of T8 in anesthetized cats, and the specificity of the monosynaptic connections from afferents in each of the two main branche...
