We present results from an independent analysis of friction that more generally addresses all crystalline materials by an extension of coincident site lattice theory and dislocation drag. Calculations for graphitic friction are carried out and agree in magnitude with experimental friction forces. More interestingly, static, dynamic and anisotropic friction forces, incommensurability effects and...

Static friction in shearing mode can be expressed as the product of the shear strength of the interface and the real contact area. The influence of roughness on friction in elastic adhesive contact is analyzed. Special attention is paid to low loading conditions, in which the number of contact points is small. The models are used to analyze a friction experiment in a MEMS friction meter.

This paper investigates the effect of moisture content on interface shear strength between offshore clay and steel plate. Although, sensitive and high plasticity offshore clay deposits are widely distributed in Malaysia and many other countries in the world, and steel is a vital construction material for many structures, research works on interaction between offshore clay and steel surface are ...

In this paper the interface behaviour between steel and concrete, during pull out tests, is numerically investigated using an interface model coupling adhesion and friction. This model (RCCM) was developed by Raous, Cangémi, Cocu and Monerie. It is based on the adhesion intensity variable, introduced by Frémond, which is a surface damage variable and its values vary between zero (no adhesion) a...

[1] In the study of natural rivers, accurate conveyance estimation is challenging because of complex cross-sectional geometry and variable flow resistance. The aim of this study was to investigate the additional friction factor due to lateral momentum transfer at the interface of vegetated and nonvegetated channel parts in two rivers: (1) the Rhine River, a large dredged river with partially ve...

The ability to absorb vibrations in a vehicle during braking conditions depends primarily on the selection of ingredients for a friction material and interfacial adhesion between all these ingredients.  In this work, a hybrid brake friction material is developed by combination of carbon fiber (CF), glass fiber (GF), resin and other ingredients. The surfaces of carbon and glass fibers are c...

Submitted for the MAR09 Meeting of The American Physical Society Rubber Friction -A Molecular Picture1 ANISH KURIAN, KUMAR NANJUNDIAH, ALI DHINOJWALA, THE UNIVERSITY OF AKRON TEAM — Understanding the relationship between adhesion, friction and the interfacial structure has been of significant interest for many years. Most tribological experiments involve measuring friction and adhesion values t...

Distributions of contact stresses at the neutral point in metal forming are very hard to be properly predicted due to the complex interface situation and lack of suitable friction models. In this paper, the dynamic friction model in which the friction depends on both time rate of strain and normal pressure has been applied to predict contact stresses in cylinder upsetting. Case studies have sho...

Stem cement debonding is 1 of the most common forms of fixation failure and is thought to be a prelude to gross loosening of a total hip reconstruction. However, the immediate consequences of debonding remains a matter of controversy. The dynamic effects of stem cement debonding in total hip reconstruction were analyzed using 3-dimensional finite element techniques. Stem cement interface condit...

Here, we have utilized Lateral Force Microscopy (LFM) based mechanical pushing of micro/nano-objects to study adhesion and friction characterization at the micro/nanoscale. Continuum micro/nano-friction models for particle rolling, spinning and sliding cases are discussed for general particle-substrate interfaces. A rolling resistance model using the Double-Hertz model is devoloped for such gen...
