An unusual delayed complication of total knee arthroplasty involving the unresurfaced patella is described. The complication is due to the impaction of a loose cement plug used to seal the defect left by the femoral intramedullary alignment rod. The origin, presentation, and management are discussed.
BACKGROUND A lateral approach with open reduction and internal fixation with a plate is a very effective technique for the majority of distal fibular fractures. However, this open approach for ankle fixation may be complicated by wound dehiscence and infection, especially in high-risk patients. An alternative to plating is an intramedullary implant, which allows maintenance of length, alignment...
Background: Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a genetic disorder characterized by increased bone fragility and multiple fractures. Approximately 90% are caused mutation in COL1A1 or COL1A2 genes, the disease transmitted either autosomal dominantly recessively appears as spontaneous mutation. Protein product of these two genes type I collagen, major structural protein skin, which affected quality,...
The Sheffield Expanding Intramedullary Rod System was developed after experiencing problems with existing rod systems in the management of osteogenesis imperfecta. Between 1986 and 1996 we treated 74 bones in the lower limb in 28 children at a median follow-up of 5.25 years. We have reviewed 24 children with a total of 60 rods. Before surgery, all children had had multiple fractures of the lowe...
The treatment of patients with tibial fractures and overweight has certain peculiarities due to the increased load on osteosynthesis device. Objective. To compare stress-strain state models lower leg a fracture tibia in upper third diaphysis under influence torsional different options depending patient's weight. Methods. Using finite element method, three types were modeled: using an external f...
The ideal size of intramedullary device to fix corrective osteotomy of proximal femur in abnormal bone in children and small patients may not be easily available. We report the successful use of Rush rod in combination with multiple Kirschner wires to fix the corrective osteotomy of coxa vara and shepherd crook deformity in two patients with osteogenesis imperfecta and fibrous dysplasia. The un...
Purpose To introduce a new model of telescopic intramedullary rod (TIR), evaluate its effects on treating patients presenting with moderate and severe osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) and to compare the findings with those of other telescopic rods. Methods A total of 21 patients (nine girls and 12 boys; mean age at first operation, 6.6 years, 1.52 to 13.18) who underwent 52 femoral operations wer...
INTRODUCTION Distal tibial fractures are the most common long bone fractures. Several studies focusing on the methods of treatment of displaced distal tibial fractures have been published. To date, locked plates, intramedullary nails and external fixation are the three most used techniques. The aim of our study was to compare intramedullary nail (IMN) and locked plate (LP) for treatment of this...
