Echocardiography was used to study left ventricular size and contraction in 128 patients with isolated aortic valve disease -45 patients with aortic stenosis, 25 with mixed aortic valve disease and 58 with aortic regurgitation. Left ventricular measurements included the end-diastolic internal dimension (LVIDd), mural thickness (PWTd), an index of circumferential myocardial contraction-fractiona...

Doppler ultrasound without concomitant echocardiographic imaging was used to grade isolated aortic regurgitation in 21 patients. The severity of aortic regurgitation was subsequently graded (from 0 to IV) angiographically. A 2 MHz continuous wave Doppler transducer was placed over the apex of the heart and the beam was aimed parallel to the mitral flow by means of acoustic guidance. Mitral pres...

OBJECTIVE To assess the pattern and progression of aortic valve dysfunction by serial Doppler echocardiographic examinations in ambulatory adult patients with congenital bicuspid aortic valve. DESIGN AND SETTING Retrospective analysis of patients referred for Doppler echocardiography over a four year period. SUBJECTS Fifty one adult patients with echocardiographic diagnosis of congenital bi...

Classically, ascending aortic dissection (AD) presents as sudden, severe chest pain that is tearing type and radiates to the back. Herein, we present a rare case of severe aortic regurgitation with silent ascending AD, which had no chest pain symptoms. The aortic valve apparatus probably masked this AD; therefore, it was not detected by echocardiography and during the surgery.

AIM While the incidence of rheumatic heart disease has declined dramatically over the last half-century, the number of valve surgeries has not changed. This study was undertaken to define the most common type of valvular heart disease requiring surgery today, and determine in-hospital surgical mortality and length-of-stay (LOS) for isolated aortic or mitral valve surgery in a United States tert...

Angiographic criteria for the recognition of aortic valve prolapse in isolated ventricular septal defect were based on the degree of aortic cusp deformity and the presence or absence of aortic regurgitation. Ninety eight consecutive patients with isolated perimembranous or infundibular ventricular septal defects who were catheterised and had aortography performed were reviewed. They included fi...

an 80-year-old diabetic man with severe aortic stenosis was admitted to our hospital for cardiogenic shock complicating non-st-elevation myocardial infarction. echocardiographic evaluation showed also a severe degree of both left ventricular dysfunction and mitral regurgitation. the patient was initially stabilized with inotropes and mechanical ventilation was necessary because of concurrent pu...

Measurements of mitral and aortic valve flows were obtained with two-dimensional Doppler echocardiography in 25 patients with isolated mitral (n = 19) or aortic (n = 6) regurgitation and regurgitant fraction was calculated as the difference between the two flows divided by the flow through the regurgitant valve. Results were compared with measurements of regurgitant fraction determined by combi...
