Qualitative and quantitative abnormalities in primary components of the tear can alter the dynamics of the lacrimal film, compromising its function. Lipids, an aqueous fraction and mucoproteins constitute the lacrimal film. Keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS) is a disease commonly diagnosed in dogs. It is characterized by the deficiency of the aqueous fraction in the lacrimal film that results in ...
An unusual, destructive form of erosive hand arthropathy is described in five postmenopausal women. Although early clinical and radiological findings were most in keeping with a diagnosis of erosive osteoarthritis (EOA), hand involvement progressed to a distribution intermediate between EOA and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Although asymptomatic, all patients had features of Sjögren's syndrome (SS...
CASE REPORT A 33-year-old woman with superficial and deep bilateral corneal vascularization and keratoconjunctivitis sicca, keratoerythema and neurosensory deafness, was diagnosed with keratitis-ichthyosis-deafness (KID) syndrome. DISCUSSION KID syndrome is a congenital ectodermal dysplasia characterized by the association of vascularizing keratitis, hyperkeratotic skin lesions and sensorineu...
The clinical demonstration of the ductular orifices of the human lacrimal gland is reported. Lacrimal fluid secretion can be shown after instillation of 2% sodium fluorescein. Ductular orifices are visible on biomicroscopy. In keratoconjunctivitis sicca the lacrimal fluid streams appear normal, or to be diminished or absent.
For an integer g ≥ 1 we consider the moduli space Sg of smooth spin curves parametrizing pairs (C,L), where C is a smooth curve of genus g and L is a thetacharacteristic, that is, a line bundle on C such that L2 ∼= KC . It has been known classically that the natural map π : Sg → Mg is finite of degree 2 2g and that Sg is a disjoint union of two components Seven g and S odd g corresponding to ev...
Salzmann’s corneal nodular degeneration has been defined as a degenerative process that follows episodes of keratitis. The diagnosis is based on the presence of elevated nodules above the surface of the cornea, usually at the periphery. The condition appears commonly associated with a history of scarlet fever, measles, trachoma, vernal keratoconjunctivitis, or phlyctenular keratoconjunctivitis ...
We study the scattering problem for the nonlinear wave equation with potential. In the absence of the potential, one has sharp global existence results for the Cauchy problem with small initial data; those require the data to decay at a rate k ≥ kc, where kc is a critical decay rate that depends on the order of the nonlinearity. However, scattering results have appeared only for the supercritic...
BACKGROUND The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of various linseed oil (LO) preparations (oral, topical, oral and topical combined) in treating experimentally induced keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS) in rabbits. Twenty male New Zealand white rabbits were divided into four groups: group C (control), group OLO (oral LO), group TLO (topical LO), and group OTLO (oral and to...
