In a series of 640 strains of Klebsiella isolated from clinical specimens over a 7-month period, there were sufficient biochemical differences between strains to allow a biochemical typing system to be established. Biochemical tests were done in solid media inoculated with a modified Steers inocula replicator. Biotypes were designated by a numerical coding system; 29 distinct biotypes were foun...

Klebsiella oxytoca was isolated from the blood of a leukemic patient. The typical pathogenicity of Klebsiella oxytoca was observed in the patient. The pathogenicity of several Klebsiella oxytoca strains isolated from blood, urine and sputum of different patients was examined in mice, and it was found that Klebsiella oxytoca isolated from the blood had a higher toxicity than the others.

Purpose: The present study aimed to confirm by classical and molecular laboratory methods hospitalassociated outbreaks due to virulent Klebsiella pneumoniae strains. Methods: Eighty three Klebsiella pneumoniae strains isolated from new-born patients, adults and hospital environment and devices in five hospital units, were analyzed for resistance to antibiotics, including last generation cephalo...

Studies were undertaken for the differentiation of members of the Klebsiella-Enterobacter (Aerobacter)-Serratia division by biochemical tests and antibiotic susceptibility. A total of 67 cultures were tested. Strain identification was readily accomplished with the use of motility tests and arabinose fermentation. In addition, a practical schema, based on sensitivity pattern, proved valuable in ...

Three hundred twenty-nine strains of the tribe Klebsielleae were compared by several biochemical tests and by susceptibility to selected antibiotics. Biochemical tests included urease, amino acid decarboxylase, and hydrogen sulfide production; fermentation of lactose and dextrose; motility; and tests in the IMViC (indole, methyl red, Voges-Proskauer, citrate) series. The isolates were: Klebsiel...

Patterns and persistency of fecal shedding of Klebsiella spp. by healthy adult dairy cattle were explored with probabilistic, statistical, and molecular methods. Fecal shedding was monitored longitudinally in 92 animals in 1 herd for 5 mo. Shedding patterns followed a random binomial distribution, and associations with host factors were not detected. For 12 animals from 4 herds, strain-typing o...

The purpose of the present study was to find out whether patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS) carry fecal Klebsiella strains that belong to serotypes or species specific for AS. Somatic serotypes (O groups), capsular (K) serotypes, and biochemically identified species were determined for fecal klebsiellae isolated from 187 AS patients and 195 control patients. The controls were patients wi...

Abstract Introduction: Klebsiella pneumoniae is an opportunistic pathogen that causes urinary tract Infection (UTI), intra-abdominal infection and pneumonia in patients with weakened immune systems or underlying diseases. Several studies have shown that the indiscriminate and irregular use of antibiotics can cause antibiotic resistance. Antimicrobial resistance has been introduced as one of ...

Introduction & Objective: One of the mechanisms of antibiotic resistance in gram negative bac-teria, particularly Klebsiella pneumonia strains, is the production of Extended-Spectrum β lactamase enzymes (ESBLs). Encoding genes of ESBLs are usually located on the plasmid and they are able to transfer to other gram-negative bacteria. Thus, due to the importance of resistance pattern recogniti...

The aim of the study was to determine the prevalence of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Klebsiella pneumoniae strains in patients with acute leukemias, to assess their clinical significance, and to define the sources and ways of their spread using genetic analysis. Thirty-four patients were investigated during the observed period. Twenty-one strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and 35 strains of Klebsi...
