We present a case of pulmonary hyalinizing granuloma (PHG). On light microscopy, the pulmonary nodular lesions consisted of extracellular, eosinophilic hyaline lamellae. Histochemical stains of the hyaline lamellae for amyloid were focally positive and the diagnosis of amyloidosis was seriously considered; however, on electron microscopic examination, the hyaline lamellae consisted of electrond...

The Pacinian corpuscle has a framework of cytoplasmic lamellae arranged concentrically in the outer zone, and bilaterally in the core. Between these is an intermediate growth zone. The inner core shows an unexpected complexity in that its component lamellae are arranged in two symmetrical groups of nested cytoplasmic sheets. Longitudinal tissue spaces form clefts separating the two groups. The ...

Loliginid squid dynamically tune the structural iridescence of cells in their skin for active camouflage and communication. Bragg reflectors in these cells consist of membrane-bound lamellae periodically alternating with low refractive index extracellular spaces; neuronal signalling induces condensation of the reflectin proteins that fill the lamellae, consequently triggering the expulsion of w...

Bowman’s layer is composed of 22nm heterotypical type I collagen fibrils, which are randomly orientated (mean direction 45o to the corneal surface). Immediately beneath Bowman’s membrane, the cornea is arranged such that there are about 300 lamellae centrally and 500 lamellae peripherally. Each is composed of uniformly paralleldirected, 25nm heterotypical type I collagen fibrils with flattened ...

Damselfly larvae, important predators and prey in many freshwater communities, may be particularly sensitive to hypoxia because their caudal lamellae (external gills) are frequently lost. In this study, we address how lost lamellae interact with low oxygen to affect respiration and behavior of the widespread North American damselfly Ischnura posita. Results showed no effect of lost lamellae on ...

Annulate lamellae have been observed in eggs of marine invertebrates (1, 6, 12, 13, 18), rat spermatids (11, 17), crayfish spermatocytes (15), the amphibian pancreas (17), the adrenal cortex of the fetal rat (14), Sarcoma 37 cells (4), HeLa cells (5), Ehrlich and Yoshida ascites tumor cells (20), m ammary carcinoma cells of the rat (16), and cells of a chicken fibrosarcoma (3). Neither the orig...

The lamellae of the bacterium Rhodospirillum molischianum originate as extensions of the cytoplasmic membrane into the cytoplasm of the cell. Initially, these extensions are narrow folds and occur independently of one another. The first lamellae to appear average about 80 A in width, representing one side of the infolded cytoplasmic membrane, or 160 A when the two sides of the fold are closely ...

Lamellae lead the way pen any cell biology text and it is clear that lamellipodia, the ruffled edges of motile cells, initiate movement. So it may come as a surprise that Gupton et al. can disrupt this domain without blocking cell movement (page 619). In fact, cells move faster without lamellipodia. The driving force for movement appears to come from the lamella, the structure that lies just pr...

Out of 27 cases of differentiated and notdifferentiated types of retinoblastoma synaptical lamelles surrounded by synaptical vesicula could be detected in 8 cases. They were observed partly in different areas of the cytoplasma, partly in projections of cells. These structures seem to evidence the neurogen origin of the retinoblastoma.

The reorientation of lamellae and the dependence of the lamellar spacing, Dlam, on polymer volume fraction, ϕP, Dlam ∝ ϕP-β, in diblock copolymer thin films during solvent vapor annealing (SVA) are examined by combining white light interferometry (WLI) and grazing-incidence small-angle X-ray scattering (GISAXS). A thin film of lamellae-forming poly(styrene-b-butadiene) prepared by spin-coating ...
