Well-defined lanthanide polysulfide complexes containing S4(2-) and S5(2-) ligands, the samarium(iii) pentasulfide complex Sm(Tp(iPr2))(κ(1)-3,5-(i)Pr2Hpz)(S5) and the tetrasulfide-bridged binuclear ytterbium(iii) complex (μ-S4)[Yb(Tp(iPr2))(κ(1)-3,5-(i)Pr2Hpz)(κ(2)-3,5-(i)Pr2pz)]2 (Tp(iPr2) = hydro-tris(3,5-diisopropylpyrazolyl)borate), have been synthesized and structurally characterized by s...

The Mt Weld lanthanide deposit in central Western Australia is considered to be one of the largest high grade deposits known in the world, first reported as a carbonate and phosphate rich ultramafic silicate intrusion that contained a resource of the Lanthanide series [1]. It has been dated between 1.6 – 2.0 billion years, where the formation of a carbonate layer in the cooling melt created a p...

The principles and practice of the application of time-resolved lanthanide chelate luminescence (or fluorescence) as a detection method for ultrasensitive bioanalytical assays such as immunoassays and nucleic acid hybridization assays are reviewed. The various lanthanide chelate-based detection systems which have been developed for use in heterogeneous and homogeneous assay formats are describe...

We report that micromolar concentrations of lanthanide ions can be required cofactors for DNAhydrolyzing deoxyribozymes. Previous work identified deoxyribozymes that simultaneously require both Zn and Mn to achieve DNA-catalyzed DNA hydrolysis (10 rate enhancement); a mutant of one such DNA catalyst requires only Zn. Here we show that in vitro selection in the presence of 10 mM lanthanide ion (...

The use of a robust optical signaling probe with a high signal-to-noise ratio is important in the development of immunoassays. Lanthanide chelates are a promising material for this purpose, which provide time-resolved luminescence (TRL) due to their large Stokes shift and long luminescence lifetime. From this, they have attracted considerable interest in the in vitro diagnostics field. However,...

In principle, the millisecond emission lifetimes of lanthanide chelates should enable their ultrasensitive detection in biological systems by time-resolved optical microscopy. In practice, however, lanthanide imaging techniques have provided no better sensitivity than conventional fluorescence microscopy. Here, we identified three fundamental problems that have impeded lanthanide microscopy: lo...

The coordinating chemistry of lanthanides, relevant to the biological, biochemical and medical aspects, makes a significant contribution to understanding the basis of application of lanthanides, particularly in biological and medical systems. The importance of the applications of lanthanides, as an excellent diagnostic and prognostic probe in clinical diagnostics, and an anticancer material, is...

We report that micromolar concentrations of lanthanide ions can be required cofactors for DNA-hydrolyzing deoxyribozymes. Previous work identified deoxyribozymes that simultaneously require both Zn(2+) and Mn(2+) to achieve DNA-catalyzed DNA hydrolysis (10(12) rate enhancement); a mutant of one such DNA catalyst requires only Zn(2+). Here we show that in vitro selection in the presence of 10 µM...

1,3-Enynes were easily prepared from coupling between vinyl halides and alkynes or domino coupling of vinyl halides in the presence of copper iodide. It is noteworthy that the double-bond geometry of the vinyl halides was retained during the reaction. This ligand-free protocol is potentially useful and practical.

A palladium-catalyzed difluoromethylthiolation of heteroaryl halides and triflates under mild conditions was described. A vast range of heteroaryl halides such as pyridyl, quinolinyl, benzothiazolyl, thiophenyl, carbazolyl and pyazolyl halides could be difluoromethylthiolated efficiently, thus providing medicinal chemists with new tools for their search of new lead compounds for drug discovery....
