This paper gives an overview on the potentials of numerical simulations for understanding dynamics in laser material processing. After a short introduction into the model, simulation results on several processes like laser beam deep penetration welding, drilling or cutting are presented. Furthermore simulation results are compared with experimentally obtained data.

The ideal electric laser efficiently converts electrical power into optical power in the form of a beam that can propagate a long distance with minimal diffraction-limited spreading. Various laser applications require scaling to high power (kWs to MWs) while maintaining a diffrac-tion-limited beam; thus, many efforts have been directed toward that goal. The main impediment to this high-power sc...

Abstract Fiber lasers feature higher energy conversion efficiency than CO 2 lasers, which enables a simple structure and energy‐saving design. Consequently, in the laser cutting processes for metal sheets, operators have been shifting usage from to fiber at an accelerated pace because of their reduced maintenance, improved absorption rate due wavelength other advantages. In actual practice, are...

In this paper propagation of combined laser beam through atmosphere is investigated. Laser beam is combined via lens array arrangement. Turbulence is considered as an affecting factor of atmosphere and its effects on transverse coherence length (Fried parameter), peak intensity, propagation efficiency, and spot size of the laser beam is investigated. Coherent and incoherent combined beam are co...

In this article, M2 factor of a thin disk laser with unstable resonator in two regimes is calculated numerically. In the first case, thermal effects are ignored and the parameters of beam width, divergence angle, radius of wave front curvature and finally, M2 factor of laser beam are calculated by using generalized beam parameters. These calculations show that the beam quality of the laser is d...

Waterjet guided laser processing is an internationally patented technique based on guiding a laser beam inside a thin, high-speed waterjet. The process combines the advantages of laser processing with those of waterjet cutting. It is very suitable in processing thin and heat-sensitive materials with a high degree of precision required. A model and simulation method for waterjet guided laser dri...

Laser micromachining has the capability to fabricate very small and basic 2.5 D geometric features on a range of materials in the form of laser ablation or irradiation. Short pulsed lasers that can achieve wide range of wavelengths in the form of harmonics of infrared laser beam at 1064 nm wavelength have been a very effective micro-machining tool used for hole drilling, cutting, scribing, trim...

Boundary encroachment or cutting right up to pre-cut sections are examples of unsteadystate operations of the laser cutting process. Cornering and generating small diameter holes also fall into this category. Heat transferis often frustrated here, resulting in bulk heating of the workpiece. This in tum leads to a degradation of the cut quality.' Currently, trial-and-error based experimentation ...
