Oligonucleotide models of ribosomal RNA domains are powerful tools to study the binding and molecular recognition of antibiotics that interfere with bacterial translation. Techniques such as selective chemical modification, fluorescence labeling and mutations are cumbersome for the whole ribosome but readily applicable to model RNAs, which are readily crystallized and often give rise to higher ...

A model for exact sensory adaptation has been published by Segel and co-workers in several papers [e.g., Knox, B. E., Devreotes, P. N., Goldbeter, A. & Segel, L. A. (1986) Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA 83, 2345-2349]. The model comprises a pair of states whose relative probabilities are determined by the binding of a ligand. A second pair of states related by the same ligand binding is accessible ...

Chemical modification of proteins provides great opportunities to control and visualize living systems. The most common way to modify proteins is reaction of their abundant amines with N-hydroxysuccinimide (NHS) esters. Here we explore the impact of amine number and positioning on protein-conjugate behavior using streptavidin-biotin, a central research tool. Dye-NHS modification of streptavidin...

A universal surface modification for glass and fused silica microchannels has been developed. The method allows for the formation of catalytic surfaces within a channel after channel closure. These surfaces can contain ligand systems or functionalities of choice covalently attached to the robust surface modification. The utility of the system is demonstrated by the formation of Jacobsen and Gla...

A Ag-mediated Pd-catalyzed cross-coupling method for 3-bromo-1,2,4,5-tetrazine with boronic acids is presented. Electronic modification of the 1,1'-bis(diphenylphosphine)ferrocene (dppf) ligand was found to be crucial good turnover. Using this fast method, a variety alkyl-, heteroatom-, and halide-substituted aryl- heteroaryl-tetrazines were prepared (29 examples, up 87% yield).

The two-electron mixed-valent complex Rh(2)(0,II)(tfepma)(2)(CN(t)Bu)(2)Cl(2) (tfepma = CH(3)N[P(OCH(2)CF(3))(2)](2)) photocatalytically splits HCl to generate H(2). Whereas this catalyst degrades rapidly, with H(2) production ceasing after about 36 hours (3 turnovers), a modified complex, Rh(2)(0,II)(tfepma)(2)(CNAd)(2)Cl(2) (CNAd = 1-adamantylisocyanide) displays enhanced stability with susta...

Human memory T cells associated with cutaneous inflammatory responses are characterized by their expression of cutaneous lymphocyte-associated Ag (CLA), a carbohydrate determinant differentially expressed on P-selectin glycoprotein ligand-1 (PSGL-1). Although expression of the CLA epitope on PSGL-1 (CLA(+) PSGL-1) by memory T cells is associated with acquisition of E-selectin ligand activity, i...

Herein, we report the emergence of multicolor photoluminescence in a mixed-valence manganite nanoparticle La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 (LSMO NP) achieved through electronic structural modification of the nanoparticles upon functionalization with a biocompatible organic ligand, sodium tartrate. From UV−vis absorption, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), time-resolved photoluminescence study, and Raman s...
