The synthesis and characterisation, including solid state structure, of a macrocycle containing both a hydrazone and a disulfide linkage is described. Selective ring-opening of the macrocycle under thermodynamic control could be achieved at either the disulfide or the hydrazone linkage by applying mutually exclusive sets of reaction conditions.

The C(benzene)-C(CH2)-N-C(-Me) torsion angle is -79.89 (13)° suggesting a synclinal orientation of the nitro-benzene ring with respect to the macrocycle. The conformation of the macrocycle is stabilized by intra-molecular N-H⋯N hydrogen bonds.

A metallosupramolecular [Pd2L4](4+) cage can be cleanly converted into a [Pd2L2Cl4] metallo-macrocycle upon addition of chloride ions.
